What’s not to love!

  • Friendly site with rural views 15 minutes' drive from Consett
  • A short walk from the Waskerley Way trail for walking and cycling
  • Spacious pitches with access to heated shower block
A warm welcome awaits at Bonners Lodge, where chief of staff Raffi the cat oversees a small team of humans, dogs, horses, pygmy goats, alpacas, a donkey and a Shetland pony at this friendly family-run site. Officially it’s Ken and Michelle that own the place, but there’s always a helping hand from canine pals Sam, Bess and Charlie… Make the five-minute drive from the A68 and settle yourself in for a hefty dose of peace and quiet: pitches have splendid views over the surrounding farmland and woods, all part of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The plots have been deliberately well spaced to give you plenty of room, so it may be that your nearest ‘neigh’bours will be horses Rosie and Rusty in their paddock. Well-behaved dogs and human folk are invited to explore the miles of walking paths that lie beyond; you need only amble across the adjacent field to join the Waskerley Way. Kids need not even stray very far to let off steam, as they can just wander over to the site’s play area for a bit of swing and slide action. Everything you need for a comfy stay has been supplied here – a cosy, heated and modern shower block includes useful bits and bobs like hairdryers to keep the travelling barnet in check.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: The location to the A68 was perfect. The site was peaceful with friendly welcoming owners. Good dishwashing area with detergent provided. Plenty bins around the site. Dog facilities were good, however, not sure it surrounded by different animals in fields. Decent sized pitches.

Disliked: Not sure about the dog exercise area in the middle of animals (goats, lamas and horse etc) who were all fenced in their own areas but not sure that some bread of dogs would cope with the sensory overload. The shower itself was good, plenty hot water and no push button, however, I'm not a fan of shower curtains and this one continually stuck throughout showering. Relatively small site and would be easy enough to make the pitches fully serviced.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: Everything Facilitates, views, peaceful, lovely owner. One of the best small sites we have ever stayed on, flat pitch, with own seating area, heated shower block and an indoor area for washing up, which had everything needed to cook if you have few facilities yourself. Farm animals, all around. Brilliant.

Disliked: Absolutely nothing.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Visited for the first time and was impressed with the lovely host and the clean and tidy site. We watched children having a wonderful time with the lovely animal interactions.

Disliked: Would have liked to be able to buy fresh farm eggs and seen chickens running free.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: thank you so much for your lovely comments we are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay. With relation to having free range chickens which we would love to have - this is not an option that we can take being a dog friendly site and having dogs ourselves it would be too difficult to keep the chickens safe.

A good place to stay but should be cheaper

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Good facilities, kitchen, games room, washing up, lots for children, animals etc. friendly owner and good amount of space. Beautiful wood carvings around. Excellent shower, excellent.

Disliked: One big bin full of everything, no recycling. Only one toilet, only one shower. But more may not be required. Bit pricey for the quality.

From the manager: Hi i am sorry that you were disappointed with your stay. We do have recycling bins but at the date of your stay the bin men missed us and the surrounding farms from the weekly collection. We pay a substantial amount for our bins to be collected so i was very upset with the council who fobbed us off for over a week before coming to empty our bins. I am not sure how you did not see the blue recycle bins as they were at the entrance to our site at the bin collection point waiting to be emptied (you had to drive past them to get on the site). We have a lot to offer our guests for such a small site, having a games room with free pool table, table tennis, table football TV DVD books toys and games. A kitchen with full facilities - cooker, microwave, kettle, toaster, fridge and a freezer. A lovely play park for the children and a meet and greet with all of our animals all at no extra charge. Our pitches are all level hardstanding with their own picnic table 4 being fully serviced so i dispute your comment about us being too expensive as we offer a lot for the price and the size of our site. The amount of showers and toilet facilities that we have per council guidelines are for up to 15 pitches and we only have 10 pitches. Other than campervans, Motor homes and caravans all have their own on board bathrooms so not all guests use our facilities.

Perfect safe compact site, plenty to keep kids entertained. Very homely

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Compact but spacious safe site with good views of site and better views of surroundings. Pitch had large picnic table and chairs supplied as well as a fire pit both included with wood to burn at back of pitch. The animal interactions dialy are great for the kids and adults. Small play area but plenty to do. Large climbing frame, swing ball, seesaw and swing aswell as a football goal. Small bridge leads into the woods with a hut with sheep for company. Secure dog area to let dogs off for a run and plenty toys in there for them. Games room was a life saver on a rainy misty day. We have a 2 YO and a baby so was a great space to feed the baby while our toddler played. It was equipped with many toys including bouncer for a baby, dolls house, lego, tracks, dolls & buggy - so much. It also has a pool table, table tennis for older kids. The kitchen area had a sink with cleaning products and a fridge, kettle and toaster. You could easy spend the day in this room with the kids as they have so much to do. It also had A TV with DVDs avaliable & a book case and games avaliable. Toilets were clean, always had toiletries avaliable. The people who owned the Lodge were friendly, welcoming and clearly cared about their business and their customers thoughts

Disliked: High altitude so therefore you get the wind. Bring a coat.

Local attractions

Make the most of your rural location by getting your walking boots on or taking to your bike to hit the trails that crisscross this scenic area. Getting to the Waskerley Way requires you only to cross one adjacent field, and then you can join this route across the moors, past the Waskerley and Smiddy Shore reservoirs and to Hownsgill Viaduct, towering 46 metres above the woodland canopy. Other fab walks can be had around Derwent Reservoir, 20 minutes away; you can dangle a rod into the water here too, to see if you can snag one of the lake’s trout (rumour has it they can weigh up to 20lb). Cyclists, meanwhile, can find some top routes at Hamsterley Forest 25 minutes away, or get their pulses racing on the downhill tracks at Descend Bike Park (25 minutes). For family-friendly attractions, head to Hall Hill Farm 15 minutes away, for lots of furry adventures riding the donkeys, feeding the llamas and watching the sheep race, or take a trip on the steam trains of Weardale Railway, 25 minutes away. Within the same distance is the famed Beamish open air museum: bag 25% discount tickets for this before setting off from the Bonners Lodge team. Also 25 minutes away is Diggerland Durham, where kids of all ages (even ones who sometimes claim to be grownups) can drive lots of different vehicles… and take lots of pics of them doing so too.
