  • Quiet family-friendly site on a working smallholding with a café
  • Hire firepits, meet animals and buy fresh produce from the farm
  • Four miles from the Suffolk coast and near several nature reserves
Fancy a stay on a smashing Suffolk smallholding, in a traditional Suffolk village with a rather smashing pub – and all just four miles from the fab Suffolk coast? Blaze up a campfire and help to feed the animals at The Shottisham Campsite, based in the village of the same name a few miles from Woodbridge. The Shottisham Campsite is part of a working smallholding home to rare breed goats, pigs, alpacas and poultry, all of which guests are welcome to meet, greet and help feed during their stay. Homemade preserves and free-range eggs and meat are available to buy from the site team, along with firewood: campfires are allowed on site in firepits, which are available for hire for guests. The campsite is also home to the Blue Rabbit Café, a farm-to-fork setup that serves up home-made breakfasts, brunches and cakes (and hosts a visit from Pete's Pizzas most Fridays for an easy evening meal). Pitches are spread across several small fields bordered by native trees and bushes. Amenities include two small shower blocks with plenty of hot water powered by solar energy; washing-up areas; a chemical disposal point; waste and recycling bins and a fridge freezer for guests' use. Dogs on secure leads are welcome and there's direct access from the site to walking trails through acres of heathland, forest and fields. The nearest beach is the fabulously peaceful Shingle Street (10 minutes' drive away), with the seaside towns of Aldeburgh (half an hour) and Southwold (45 minutes) also well worth visiting.

Liked: Lovely quiet campsite. Toilets and showers very clean. Nice having hens walking around, and observing the animals. Nice walk around campsite. Ideal for visiting National trusts, National forest and quiet beach not far away. Liked how got pitch number through email, so could drive straight to pitch. James was friendly and gave advice on where to visit. Stayed extra night, I emailed James whom responding within 30 mins. Free WiFi a bonus

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Everything! Calm, relaxed environment. Quiet. Clean toilets and showers, always hot water in showers. Great animal feeding from Claire. Surrounding environment for exploration. Lots of day trip opportunities close by.

Disliked: Price of logs for hired fire pit was a bit steep.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Immaculate clean showers and toilets - use of fridge and freezer. Nice people who stayed on campsite. Also enjoyed the use of the fire pits.

Disliked: Felt the campsite was a bit neglected and didn’t look like photos, and we didn’t receive a particularly warm welcome from owner. We understood prior to arrival that the cafe was shut which was understandable, but we were disappointed that there was no produce available to buy on the campsite. Although this may have been available, but we couldn’t find it or we were not told where to find it.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Amazing and clean facilities. No matter what time you went for a showered always one free and hot water. Tent pitches are nice and big. Lovely walks. Nice quiet friendly camp site. The animals feeding with Claire was brilliant. She made everyone laugh and the kids (and adults) all had a great time. WiFi worked well and water points and toilet blocks located in great places for all campers.

Disliked: Cafe wasn't open but had been told about this via email on booking due to ill health. But didn't effect the time we had there.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Great site. Loved the numbered pitches and self check-in. Beautiful setting.

Disliked: Swearing group of teenagers (plus their commentary on how much alcohol they they have left) pitched next to us when I'm camping with my 11 yr old. Obviously, not the fault of the site but not ideal when camping with kids.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Lovely quiet campsite with plenty of walks around it and the village pub a few minutes walk away. Toilet blocks and other facilities were clean. Illness of staff prevented the onsite cafe opening - I'm sure it would have been a useful addition to the experience. Handy for Sutton Hoo, Bawdsey (Radar Museum) and for the River Ferry across to Felixstowe Ferry.

Local attractions

The Shottisham Campsite is two miles from the River Deben, which can be explored via canoe or pleasure boat trip for lazy afternoons. If you'd rather make a break for the beach, the wild and unspoilt pebble beach at Shingle Street is your closest; for a sandy beach you'll need to travel to Felixstowe (35 minutes' drive) or Southwold (45 minutes). The handsome coastal town of Aldeburgh, home to a couple of top-rated fish and chip shops as well as fishermen's huts selling the latest catch, is also within easy reach. About four miles away is the market town of Woodbridge, lying along the River Deben and near both the 3,700 acres and miles of bike trails of Rendlesham Forest and the fab ancient burial site of Sutton Hoo, famed as the most significant Anglo-Saxon site in the land. Orford and Framlingham castles are also good old options in the area, or you could go wildlife watching instead, at one of the several nature reserves around including Orford Ness National Nature Reserve and RSPB Minsmere. The Alde Estuary around Snape Maltings is another well-known spot for wildlife watching; after a nature spotting trip, trek into town to take in a show at the Snape Maltings Concert Hall (an oyster bar is in the hall too). Plenty of other options are within five miles of Shottisham, including fishing, sailing, a public swimming pool, a cinema, golf, horse riding and several pubs and restaurants.
