  • On a small working farm in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • A 10-minute walk to the famed Sutton Hoo National Trust site
  • About a 10-minute drive to Woodbridge and Rendlesham Forest
A melodic name isn’t all Sutton Hoo has going for it… this site on a small working farm among free-range chickens is also less than a 10-minute walk from Sutton Hoo. You'll have heard of that of course: the splendid Anglo-Saxon ship burial where a warrior king lay for 1,400 years, and hailed since its discovery in the 1930s as one of the finest archaeological finds anywhere in Britain. Trips down memory lane are all around the local area too, as the park's in the age-old Suffolk Coast and Heath Area of Natural Beauty, and a 10-minute drive from the Woodbridge Tide Mill on the River Deben, one of the last in the world still churning up flour using time-honoured techniques. Visit to learn about the process through interactive activities then ply the streets and traditional stores of the pretty riverside market town of Woodbridge – it’s got a butcher, fishmonger and greengrocer (as well as more modern amenities like a supermarket, coffee shops and clothes boutiques). Get your supplies from these local producers then tote it back to the park and cook it up on the campfire while the kids and dogs run around on the big grass field opposite. And if you're after more historical expeditions once fully fed? Orford (20 minutes’ drive) and Framlingham (25 minutes) both have castles to check out, while the coastal and woodland walks near the site are sure to have you harking back to simpler times. One tree-lined place for a wander close by is Rendlesham Forest a 10-minute drive away, which is well worth a visit for its play areas, picnic spots and bike park, as well as its orienteering trails and horse riding paths.

Liked: Spacious, quiet site. Good shower/toilet block. Electric & water on pitch. Great for my one night stopover, but would also be great for a longer stay. Right by Sutton Hoo, and a good cycle into Woodbridge.

Liked: Everything! The site is super easy to find, flat and the pitches are very spacious with little hedge dividers. Loved having drinking water next to each pitch and electric. Facilities all good and clean and nice to use. Dogs loved it. Great location, very central. Will be back next year 😊

Disliked: Midges lol! Take a good repellant!

Fully-serviced grass and sand pitch

Liked: Great location, really close to Sutton Hoo National Trust site and Woodbridge. Pitches were also nice and big, with hedges between which helped with privacy.

Disliked: There weren't many toilets/showers and they could have been a little cleaner (eg toilet paper on the floor of the toilets and cobwebs in shower). WiFi didn't work at our pitch, but could live without that!

Fully-serviced grass and sand pitch

Liked: The best campsite we've stayed in this summer!!! Others could learn from this place. For the price this site was wonderful, would happily stay again and again... Small site (20ish pitches) dotted around a central field created a friendly communal feel but with enough space (and hedges) to have that privacy. Each pitch was spacious (enough to comfortably fit a 5 man tent and a car), plus each had electric, water and drain. We loved the small play area in the middle, it meant our little one could play but we could set up the tent and still see him. There was also a small wooded area with a slack line he loved. When we arrived our name was on the board stating our pitch and the owner (Helen) did the rounds in the early evening to say hi and check we had everything. Very easy to therefore just drive on and get set up after a long day. The firepits were a nice extra touch. What was nice was that you could either get a full barrow load for £10 (enough for several nights!) or bring your own wood for free. This worked for us as we only wanted a couple of logs for marshmallows so brought a few with us. As the sun set the site quietened as people just sat around their fire pits having a social drink and a quiet chat. The amenities block and entrance was well lit but the rest of the site had no other light so it created a very pleasant ambience to the place. The facilities were clean and well looked after. In addition to the usual male/female showers and toilets there was an accessible/family wash facility (didn't need to use it but was surprised to see there was a bath if we had needed it). The little reception shed had a large communal freezer and fridge and even a plug and kettle. The kettle was really useful rather than having to get the stove out and was a simple but nice extra touch. Free WiFi across the entire site was really useful too. Strong signal too. In the morning there was some road noise and vehicles from the farm. However this was not a discomfort. Road noise was nothing more than what you would get at any other location and was quiet in the evening, it was just the morning. The farm machines weren't going until 7:30 by which point the sun had already woke us up, plus it's a farm you expect that they work early hours. The location is literally next to National Trust Sutton Hoo, as in neighbours, and is clearly sign posted. Fantastic location for anyone visiting.

Disliked: Nothing! Keep everything as it is, never change!!!!

Local attractions

Once you’ve had your wander in the woods, the water awaits: the River Deben is just the spot for fishing and sailing less than 10 minutes’ drive away. You can also hire rowing, sailing and canoeing boats and explore the islands and waterways of Thorpeness (30 minutes) and its mere or switch to the artsy coastal town of Aldeburgh (25 minutes’ drive) for strolls on the North Sea sands, catching flicks at the century-old cinema and jaunts up the old Martello Tower. Another scenic seaside village is Southwold further on at 45 minutes from the park with its Victorian pier and classic white lighthouse. And if you're into twitching? The coastal birding spots of Minsmere and Dunwich are both 40 minutes’ drive.
