  • Wild camping pitches in peaceful woodland near Saxmundham, Suffolk
  • A 15-minute drive to Snape Maltings, and 25 minutes to Southwold
  • Wildlife on site, easy access from the A12, close to shops and pubs
Thurstons Farm has just a handful of pitches in a self-seeded wilderness area – all ready and waiting for you to wild camp under the stars at a peaceful place to enjoy the Suffolk countryside. And all the pitches are totally separate, so there’ll be no bother with noisy neighbours on this site. The camping meadow is separate to the main grounds of the farmhouse, so you can roam around within the self-sown woodland and surrounding ponds in complete privacy. And yes – this really, absolutely is wild camping – so you won’t find any showers, there’s no running water and only a compost toilet on site. But don’t forget that the owners are just across the road, so if there is any problem, they will be able to help (sssh, they’ve got a wifi connection if you need to get hold of folks, and they’ll always top up water bottles for you too). The grounds of Thurstons Farm are a hidden woodland playground, surrounded by rural landscapes and rare wildlife like great-crested newts and barn owls – go quietly and you might just get to spot them. It’s also extremely handy: even though the site in the middle of the countryside, the local village is a short walk away, it’s easy to find from the A12 road, and you can stock up in nearest shops and supermarkets in Saxmundham (10 minutes’ drive), where there are pubs and restaurants too. There’s plenty of safe storage space for bikes if you’re bringing the wheels, and you can soon be on coastal cycling paths, forest tracks or quiet country lanes.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Secluded spot, lots of wildlife around.

Disliked: As the most expensive wild camping site in the area, we were disappointed. On the site itself it had everything as advertised but everything needed some TLC. Footpaths between the carpark and site needed the brambles cutting back, no sawdust in the composting loo (so won’t compost properly and smelt), toilet was full of cobwebs with Ivy growing into it. It says that you can get water and electricity at the main house, but we never saw anyone, so had no idea where it was. Shame really as it’s a nice place to pitch a tent.
