  • Simple, peaceful Norfolk site over 20 acres near North Walsham
  • A 10-minute drive to the coast; 20 minutes to The Broads
  • Lake on site, with rowing boat for guest use; secure bike storage
Sometimes simplicity, space and a serene setting are all you need – and that’s what you’ll get at Norfolk site Barnside Camping, in a peaceful rural location a mile and a half from the Georgian market town of North Walsham. There’s a splendid 20 acres of mixed pasture and woodland here, plus a small lake and boat house thrown in for good measure (and even a little rowing boat that guests are welcome to try out their paddling skills in). If you need more open space to explore, it’s easy to get out for walks from here, perhaps along the North Walsham and Dilham Canal or out onto a network of local footpaths. Tucked away down a quiet country lane, this place feels like a real rural retreat, but it’s got plenty of amenities within easy reach, including a butcher half a mile away (handy for your barbecue supplies) and various shops and a sizeable supermarket in North Walsham. There are plenty of independent restaurants and farm shops around too for a taste of the local area. Also within easy reach is the Norfolk coast, with the closest beaches being Mundesley, 10 minutes’ drive away and the dog-friendly Trimingham (15 minutes). You may also like to drop into Overstrand (20 minutes) for fresh seafood, or stop by to see the seals at Horsey Gap (half an hour). Back on site, life is pretty straightforward, with peace valued over tons of facilities – guests will, however, have access to a toilet block and a communal fridge.

Local attractions

As well as the coastline, there are more watery vistas and activities to explore in The Broads. Maybe you’d like to hire a boat for the day from Wroxham (25 minutes’ drive) or try your hand at paddleboarding from Coltishall (20 minutes). There are lots of lanes around the area for cyclists (along with safe bike storage on site), and there’s further activity in the form of a leisure centre and bowling alley in North Walsham. For a sense of the area’s history, have a day out in Norwich (40 minutes), touring the Elizabethan buildings, the ornate cathedral and the medieval castle. Two nearby National Trust properties make great visits too: Blickling Hall, once home to the Boleyn family, and the elegant Felbrigg Hall are both within a 20-minute drive. If that doesn’t win favour with the kids, perhaps try the zipwires and jungle bridges of BeWILDerwood (20 minutes) or the thrill rides and live displays at Pleasurewood Hills Family Theme Park (50 minutes), or set off to see the Sea Life Centre in Great Yarmouth (40 minutes).
