  • Wildflower meadow pitch at Bressingham Gardens near Diss in Norfolk
  • A 30-minute drive to the Waveney Valley; 25 to Thetford Forest Park
  • Themed garden strolls, a plant shop and steam-railway rides on site
Wonderfully located in a secluded prairie meadow surrounded by trees, the gorgeously kitted out bell tents at Bressingham Gardens sit within 17 acres of land near Diss in Norfolk. Here, you can potter around the gorgeous themed glades or explore a bit further afield into the Waveney Valley and the countryside of Norfolk and Suffolk. Accommodating two adults only, the tent has a cosy design with lots of little luxurious touches, from a kingsize bed and bespoke wooden furniture to snug seating so you can put your feet up in comfort after a long day’s adventuring. Get the woodburning stove going for cosy nights in; all the kit is laid on so you can produce a meal for two as well. On balmy evenings you'll want to snuggle up by the firepit and get down to some serious flame-gazing or barbecuing. Off grid this bell tent may be, but guests are provided with a fully charged battery pack to power LED lighting inside the tent – and you can also recharge those all-important phones and tablets. There’s no wifi connection on site, by the way, but there is decent 4G coverage. The ‘sit-down’ compost toilet is close by – and you can avoid after-dark mishaps as solar lighting guides your way around the site after dark. Mains water is available nearby too.

Sunset bell tent

Liked: We stayed in a beautiful Bell tent, this was within a lovely picturesque setting. Everything was close by. Everything had been thought about right to the smallest detail.

Disliked: The only downside was the compost toilet which was very clean but just not to our preference.

Route directions

The site suggests that guests do not use Satnav. Turn south into a small lane that has a blue sign stating 'NO ENTRY'; it is opposite School Road, a road which leads to the village (What3Words: adopters.cape.expectant.). Drive slowly down the lane. The bell tents on the left. Drive on, past a small redbrick bridge on the right, and then turn left after a gate to the 'VOLUNTEERS CARPARK'. Park here.

Local attractions

Well, you’ve got this far, so you mustn’t miss the chance to have a good old nose around the fabulous Bressingham Gardens (on site), where ever-changing scenery offers new views and colours each season. There’s a plant shop where you can pick up some species to grow at home, and if you’re after a change of perspective, how about touring the gardens aboard a locomotive from Bressingham Steam Museum (five minutes’ walk)? Continuing the gardening theme (it’s probably why you’re here, after all), you can browse and buy the blooms at Peter Beales Roses (20 minutes’ drive), and take long walks through purple heather on Wortham Ling (five minutes). But never fear, there’s plenty of non-gardening stuff to do in this corner of East Anglia, from having a wander around the romantic ruins at Eye Castle (20 minutes) to mugging up on your military history at Norfolk Tank Museum (half an hour). You might like to taste a few wee drams at The English Whisky Company, and in the evening up the pace by heading out for a dinner à deux at Wyken Vineyards (both 20 minutes).
