  • Warwick Castle and Royal Leamington Spa within 15 minutes' drive
  • Fishing on site (for an extra charge); farm shop/café a mile away
There are many reasons why one might fancy settling down by a river – perhaps for the fishing, the views, the wildlife… maybe even the chance to get in the water. Happily, all of the above are on the cards at Avon Wild Camping, a peaceful Warwickshire site on the banks of the River Avon 15 minutes' drive from Leamington Spa. There’s a mighty pretty stretch of the river running alongside one side of this site, making it a prime spot for kids to paddle and catch minnows in the shallows (under supervision, of course) or for grownups to pick up permits (available on site for an extra charge) to try their luck with the chub, pike, grayling, roach and brown trout that swim in the waters. It’s a popular part of the world with wildlife too, so settling down by the river with binoculars and/or a drink also comes highly recommended. All is very laidback around here: it’s a pick-your-own pitch place, with heaps of space to choose from around the 12 acres of meadow. Being a back to basics site there are no electric hookups or showers, but there is access to limited (but clean) toilet facilities. As this is an eco site, the toilets run on rain water, guests are strongly encouraged to recycle and, without wifi, the kids are free to focus on playing by the river. Alfresco meals can be cooked up at the campfire area; there are firepits and kiln-dried timber available if you need them. Pick up supplies for such things at the farm shop a mile away; it’s also got a café for coffee, cakes, pizzas and other meals if you’d rather eat out. There are several good country pubs nearby too, or you could scoot into Royal Leamington Spa (10 minutes’ drive) for more places to eat and drink.

Liked: Everything. Place was great with amazing views of the river. Pizza freshly cooked was stunning. People on reviews moaned about the toilets but they were cleaned constantly. Chatted to the people who work there and they were very friendly and welcoming. A very much needed relaxing break and I will be going again in the coming weeks as a tranquil switch off go to place.. 9.5/10.... Come on, no one gives a 10 but it's close 👍

Disliked: The free flowing river was cold...boiler could have been broken. Haha

From the manager: Thank you for your kind words John :) As we’re 100% off-grid , the team work incredibly hard to deliver this service, but it’s nice to know that everything runs from solar, so our eco approach matches the beautiful countryside that we share with nature. We will continue our organic approach to developing the site further so hopefully, next time you visit there will be some more additions. Thanks Again

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Loved the stay here. Good sized field and very level. The onsite facility for food was very good. And £5 to hire a fire pit including logs was fantastic. There is a relatively deep stream that meanders its way around the back of the site and the kids were loving it! I’d recommend taking a big rubber ring and going on a lazy river ride! We stayed in our van, put a few chairs out and enjoyed the stars. The ladies running the site were also great! 100% we will be returning. Ps don’t be put off that there’s no showers. Just jump in the lovely clean stream 🤣

Disliked: No issues from us

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Very relaxed casual setting, fire pit rental with the firewood was a perfect touch which pretty much made the trip being able to sit by a fire on the evening, being only our second time camping we're still learning and acquiring different bits of equipment so this really made it a great experience.

Disliked: Nothing really, although not having much to compare it to, the people were nice, it wasn't too crowded and the toilet facilities were clean enough, nothing to dislike

Liked: Very nice place, few restrictions, easy in and out process, you just go through the gate and pick your spot. Very helpful team, very clean toilets well maintained round the clock , tissue and soap are available all the time day and night. Highly recommend place especially for large group as you can locate your tents easily next to each other.

Disliked: Nearly nothing, just dogs on loose, one excited dog visited our food couple of times which was annoying but clearly this is not the camp responsibility.

Local attractions

The big draw around here is Warwick Castle (15 minutes’ drive) – it’s well worth a proper day out to explore the dungeons, take in the shows, get lost in the maze, see the birds of prey flying, wander through the 64 acres of the estate… oh, and visit the castle itself, of course. For something just a little less expansive, head instead to Kenilworth Castle and Elizabethan Garden (15 minutes) or stroll around the pretty Jephson Gardens in Royal Leamington Spa (10 minutes). Coventry (15 minutes) and Stratford-upon-Avon (25 minutes) are other good options for urban days out; try Ryton Pools Country Park (five minutes) or Stoneleigh Deer Golf Club (over the road) if you’d rather stay rural. If you need family days out, take bouncy kids over to the Jump In trampoline park (15 minutes), or get set for farm-based fun among the animals, play areas, funfair rides and escape rooms at Hatton Adventure World (25 minutes).
