  • Rural south Warwickshire site on a peaceful 10-acre field
  • Warwick and Stratford-upon-Avon within a half-hour drive
  • Part of a 400-acre family farm; a mile's walk from two pubs
If you're just itching to dig out your wellies, wang 'em in the boot and set out to amble with animals, it's probably high time you set out for Shire Camping in southern Warwickshire. Here there are 10 acres for pitching, building fires and exploring, with gorgeously green landscapes all around. Once you've thoroughly surveyed your surrounds, it's also easy to get out to the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the border of which is a mere five-minute drive from base. If you have a soft spot for walking routes and English country lanes, this well-connected site could be a good fit – Shire Camping is close to a range of footpaths (some of which run as little as a few feet from the site entrance), so it's easy to walk the mile into Oxhill village centre for lunch at one of its two pubs. The ground here is flat and level, making it straightforward to pitch up and sort out all the relevant alfresco accoutrements. Portaloos are available for guests that don't have their own toilets. Another piece of good news is that fires can be built here, so getting toasty on chillier evenings shouldn't be an issue. The management just asks that you buy all fuel on site – no foraging for sticks through the undergrowth, please. Oh, and one final piece of housekeeping – the site has no waste disposal facilities, so you'll need to take all litter home with you.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Location - middle of nowhere. If you're after peace and quiet, this is it (we visited midweek in August). Unbelievable dark skies giving the opportunity for some star gazing by the fire pit. Facilities - nice hot showers, dish wash area and very clean toilets. Only down side was not having bins but this is made very clear before booking. Every pitch had a fire pit and Harry will drop off wood/kindling once you get settled. Pitches are huge with good space between them. Local area - we were travelling from the North and dropped into a retail park outside of Coventry to pick up food and drink supplies on the way down. There's a small village with a pub about a twenty minutes stroll off the site.

Liked: Perfect camp site for exploring Stratford Upon Avon and Warwick Castle. Harry couldnt have been more welcoming and helpful. Rare to find a campsite that allows fires these days, but i wouldnt camp without one! Thanks for a great experience.

Bell tent

Liked: The campsite was spacious and calm. Toilets and wash facilities were constantly cleaned, there was no electricity on site but each pitch was allocated a fire pit and Harry would drive round to with wood etc to buy. Each pitch was huge. We rented a bell tent and still had enough room for the kids to run around.

Disliked: Can't really fault it.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Categorically one of the most beautiful sites I've ever stayed on. Genuine warm welcome from Harry who runs the site on his family farm. Harry could not have been more friendly, helpful and respectful. My 14yrs old daughter and I pitched up for one Wednesday night, bit of a test run for longer trips. Stunning site, only shared by two other camping grps but we were so far apart it almost felt like we had it to ourselves. We pitched in the first section, lovely large, flat pitch short walk to water point and the rustic fire pit at our pitch was genius and a real bonus. But, honestly - every pitch looked great. As unspoilt as possible, with long grass in central areas, with little walking paths through. Lovely little wash up area, loos and hot showers, but they look quite funky/rustic. I like the concept of wild camping, but to be honest proper flushing loos was an unexpected brucie bonus. The ecover hand-wash and washing up liquid was a lovely touch (thank you). Wide open skies, stunning sunsets, grazing cattle nearby and dark skies at night that made our hearts sore. After we (finally) got our tent up we just chilled, talked, played games and had little walk (there's a larger open mowed field at back too)...it was exactly what we'd hoped for and weather was stunning. A longer stay would've defo included some of walks right from site, there's National Trust nearby and some other lovely activities shared on notice board. It was an absolute haven. Thank you Shire Camping for helping create such beautiful memories for my daughter and I. Wishing you every success.

Disliked: My ability to put up our family tent without my other half (I'll be better next time!) Leaving...would've stayed for days and days

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Pitches are massive, well spaced for privacy. Water taps are nearby. Very clean site. Toilets and showers are in excellent condition and clean. Don't even have to worry about wood for campfire - gets delivered to your pitch! Great location to avoid the crowds in Cotswold and fabulous location for all sunset addicts!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Lovely site with good sized pitches. Great to also have a fire pit. Nice hot showers which were spotless. Very helpful owner.

Disliked: The toilets were too small to get in with a small child who needed assistance. Perhaps having one larger would help.

Local attractions

Get moving and venture out to Tysoe (five minutes' drive), where there's a range of walks and historic buildings worth perusing. Almost just as close to base are Upton House and Gardens (10 minutes), an attractive country pile and grounds managed by the National Trust, Shipston-on-Stour (10 minutes), a pic-worthy Cotswold village, and Red Road Nursery (10 minutes), a family-friendly farm where you can pick your own seasonal fruit and veg. If you'd like a bit of high-adrenaline action to mix things up while on relaxing rural breaks, go gliding at Shenington Gliding Club (10 minutes) for impressive panoramas over the Warwickshire and Oxfordshire hills. Keep the blood pumping with a trip to Wedgnock Rifle and Pistol Club (30 minutes), Adventure Sports Karting (30 minutes) or Warwick Golf Centre (25 minutes). Town-based jaunts to Warwick (25 minutes) are also recommended: shopping, a medieval castle and lots of riverside green space should push various buttons if heading here. If there's time, you should also check out Moreton-in-Marsh (20 minutes) and Stratford-upon-Avon (25 minutes), Shakespeare's birthplace.
