Stone circle (added by manager 02 Sep 2022)
Bell tents by the water
Airstream with table, chairs and fire basket
Green pitches with plenty of room

  • Quiet and simple site with Cotswolds views and holistic retreat centre
  • Within a couple of minutes' drive from a Whichford pub serving food
  • Half an hour to Stratford and an hour to the Cotswolds Water Park
Itā€™s a proper Cotswolds cracker this one, quiet and friendly with bags of room. Peace and quiet are the top priorities at Cotswolds Camping, just outside the Gloucestershire village of Whichford, in a substantial spot with a moat in one corner, valley views from another, and woods and the village church on the other side. The team here want visitors to enjoy the full benefits of a stay in deep country; for that reason, groups, dogs and kids under 12 aren't allowed on site, and radios, sound systems, one-man bands, male voice choirs and the like should keep it switched off. (There's wifi in the camping kitchen if you really can't stay switched off.) The owners probably donā€™t mind you humming a tune as you build your campfire though, and there are spots for that all around this secluded site. Bundles of firewood are available for sale. Sharing the site with you and the buzzards is Holycombe Holistic Retreat Centre and its treatments for body and soul from acupuncture and reiki to massage and hypnotherapy. (The wooded hills, mill streams and ancient stone villages of the Cotswolds are of course a therapy of their ownā€¦) Thereā€™s a fine olde inn with fine grub in Whichford, a two-minute drive or a 15-minute walk away; for supermarkets and supplies, itā€™s 20 minutes by car to Banbury.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Facilities and location of the camp site were great, very picturesque. Clean standard of washing area, shower and toilets.

Disliked: There is a church nearby and a very punctual bell ringer who rang on the hour, every hour - even during the night!

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: A real back to nature feel, well kept and sufficient spaces between pitches allowing plenty of privacy. Showers and toilets were clean and towel in toilet was replaced frequently during our one day stay.

Disliked: Lack of instruction for arrival. We arrived not knowing what to do. Called number on board but no reply. The regular church bells throughout the day and night were loud and intrusive. Aware this is not the sites responsibility but had a negative impact on our stay due to lack of sleep.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for your review Helen. Glad you liked the site in general and found the facilities clean. We did think arrival instructions for campers were sent automatically- our apologies! I will find out if it's possible for this to be added or if not we will send them manually. We do monitor the phone and are regularly up on the campsite to welcome guests, but as everyone arrives at different times we can't be there all the time. And we may miss a phone call here and there but 9/10 we will answer where we can. Regarding the church bells, yes they do ring regularly and appreciate some people find it disturbing, there are free earplugs available at the facilities. I'm not sure if the wind direction affects this as sometimes no one mentions it and other times it is an issue. But as you say unfortunately this is out of our control and not something we can change sadly.

Loved the campsite but I won't be staying here again

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Everything was "as advertised" and a great site with no hassles and no children.

Disliked: I read some of the reviews from previous people who stayed and noted the comments about the nearby church bells..... If you want to sleep at night then I suggest you don't stay here. Church bells are loud and they chime every 15 minutes !!! I am a good/heavy sleeper with earplugs when camping and I didn't get any sleep. I appreciate this is NOT the fault of the campsite but please be aware of this local noise pollution - you have been warned. Honestly, there is no reasonable need for church bells chiming ALL NIGHT

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for your review Peter, we are pleased to hear you think our site was great. We are a bit disappointed that the church bells had such a negative impact on your stay. We offer free earplugs for guests and they are normally sufficient to block out the noise, I think where you pitch can have an impact I.e. the right hand side of the stone circle is closest to the church and they will be louder there, so we recommend the pitches near the facilities/by the orchard if you think they may disturb you as these are lower down and sheltered from the bells. Unfortunately the bells are out of our control, 9 times out of 10 it won't affect guests, I think some people can block them out and see it as background noise and others find it very disturbing, we do think it is a bit unfair to give such a low score solely because of the bells however, as this is something out of our control and we warn guests about them as much as we can. It was mentioned by others staying the same weekend so I think the wind direction must have played a part over your stay, as they can be much louder if the wind is blowing towards the campsite, or nearly silent if the wind is blowing in the opposite direction!

Great place to stay.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: How quiet and peaceful the campsite was. Choice of pitches to stay in. The fact that you could have a fire. Location.

Disliked: The showers were not quite so clean as I would have liked.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for your great review Aleicia, we love that you found the site quiet and peaceful - that is our main aim! We are very sorry that the showers were not upto scratch over your stay, I can assure you we do clean them regularly and I think it is more dependant on other guests cleanliness - some are very respectful of shared facilities and others not so much! We could have just cleaned them, but if someone has come in and left them in a worse state they would stay like that until the next clean. If you contact us in an instance like this we would come and sort it immediately. We hope to welcome you here again in the future :)

Local attractions

Whether your passion is wildlife or windsurfing, castles or kayaks, thereā€™s a high probability of finding it in the Cotswolds. Many people visit simply to see the pretty villages featured so often on their TV screens (usually after a fictional murder) and there are fine examples of the kind at Shipston-on-Stour (10 minutesā€™ drive), Chipping Camden and Bourton-on-the-Water, both within half an hour. The latter are good places to hire bikes and explore the area on the numerous cycle trails too. Walkers are well supplied here, with the mighty Macmillan Way (Lincolnshire to Dorset) passing right by and the Cotswolds Way National Trail beginning in Chipping Camden. You can see a lot by walking 10 to 15 minutes to Whichford Wood, a place teeming with wildflowers and wildlife and a small space you can still lose yourself in; alternatively, lose yourself in the largest collection of trees and plants at Batsford Arboretum (20 minutes). For things watery, the Cotswolds Water Park is an hour away for kayaking and wetlands nature walks. To see nature of a wilder kind, Cotswolds Wildlife Park (40 minutes) has ferocious and endangered beasts from all over the world, and at Birdland (half an hour) 500 species of feathered things flit about a fab park. History buffs, head 10 minutes to the ancient Rollright Stones, quarter of an hour to Broughton Castle, or half an hour to the home of the Bard, Stratford-upon-Avon.
