  • Simple family-friendly site with eco values and countryside views
  • A 25-minute drive to Stratford-upon-Avon and Chastleton House
  • A short walk or drive from pubs and shops
Pining for a family-friendly break that includes ample time for rural relaxing, but also the chance to get to grips with Shakespeare’s hometown? In a countryside setting 25 minutes’ drive away from Stratford-upon-Avon, Aylesmore Farm Campsite is exactly the spot to escape the rush and come and listen to the birdsong for a few days… Family-run and family-friendly, the emphasis here is upon being low impact on the local area. This means that the facilities have been kept simple, with just composting toilets and basic cold water washing-up facilities (and don’t expect the grass to be cut short either). All rubbish must be taken home, as there are no bins. The eco site has spectacular views over the surrounding farmland, so you may want to take in the views over a barbecue. There is one firepit on site too (no open fires are permitted). Shipston-on-Stour, the local market town 10 minutes’ drive from the site, also has plenty of pubs and restaurants for all different tastebuds – and it’s fondly known as ‘the gateway to the Cotswolds’. The site is also within walking distance of pubs, a village shop, a bakery and a butcher's, and the owners highly recommend a lovely kids-friendly café in Whichford. When you’re not making new friends with the other guests or exploring the local countryside, make your way to Stratford-upon-Avon. Here you can take a ghost or Shakespeare tour, visit Shakespeare’s own haunts, catch a theatre show or row a boat down the river Avon.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The views and the friendliness of the owners. It’s on top of a hill and the weather was in our favour after being wet all week. Lovely sunset overlooking a valley.

Disliked: Nothing,

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The view was amazing, was lovely and quiet.. only around 7 pitches which made our stay nice and secluded and chill. The campsite had everything we needed for a night away.

Disliked: The cows in the next field tried their own version of bohemian rhapsody early in the morning but what can you do about that hahah! Also, if there was hot water on site we would have extended our stay!

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: This is a gem of a campsite. Absolute peace and quiet. You can’t hear anything but crickets and birds - except the odd cow mooing. Every little detail is thought of - Soap at sinks, notes advising how things work, toys and ride ons for kids. The toilets are spotless and absolutely charming - never imagined a compost toilet could be made so homely!! The toilets are even kitted out for helping little ones as a stool is provided for a supervising parent with books and toys. Just too cute! But the overriding thing about this site is the view. 300 degree unspoilt rolling countryside and greenery and visible from every pitch. The grass is soft and green and lovely to walk around in bare feet, with higher growing grass surrounding each pitch to really give a sense of privacy. The owners are super welcoming and helpful and are clearly passionate about the environment and nature, which shows in how they’ve laid out the site. And they also care about providing the best experience for their guests. I will be back!!

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: If you like your camping wild and off-grid, and in a beautiful location that let’s you truly switch off, then you will love it here. It may be basic, (exactly what we wanted), but it’s well looked after and has the essentials (drinking water, washing-up facilities, fire pits and wood). Even the long-drop toilets are clean and pleasant. But the real beauty is the unspoilt panoramic view of the countryside. And the fact it’s small means every pitch gets a front-row seat in this little slice of peaceful heaven. We’ll definitely be back!

Local attractions

After visiting Sezincote House & Garden, you might be ready to compose your own sonnet declaring your fondness of the Mogul Indian palace (25 minutes’ drive). It’s one of a handful of gorgeous historical sites a short drive away from the site… A grand day out indeed can be had at the Jacobean country house of Chastleton House (25 minutes) or the arts and crafts garden of Hidcote (25 minutes). Nab a spot on a guided tour around Broughton Castle (20 minutes) too, a fortified manor house with a moat and Great Hall. The Rollright Stones (15 minutes), made from the Jurassic oolitic limestone of the Cotswolds, have been around since the Bronze age and Neolithic period. That’s one last historic site before you return to the present, perhaps with a visit to the All Things Wild (half an hour) zoo or Fairytale Farm’s playgrounds, petting zoo and fairytale-themed gardens (20 minutes). As for a peaceful stroll indeed with nothing to distract you but gorgeous flowers from all corners of the world, get that at the 56-acre Batsford Arboretum and Garden Centre (25 minutes).
