  • Park in the grounds of a country inn close to walking footpaths
  • A 20-minute drive from Alton Towers and 25 from the Peak District
  • Meals served at the pub; play area and farm animals in grounds
Charlie Bassetts, a family-friendly site in the grounds of a fab pub (closed on Mondays) serving up homemade food and tasty ales, is a place many of the smart folk who’ve visited quite rightly deem a hidden gem. See for yourself by settling down at this destination in Dilhorne, 20 minutes from the rides at one of Britain’s best theme parks, Alton Towers, and the aquatic antics at Waterworld. It's in an easy-access section of Staffordshire, just off the A50 road and 15 minutes' drive from Stoke-on-Trent. Popular Peak District towns like Buxton (25 minutes) and Bakewell (an hour) are easy to get to too. Rather roams over rollercoasters? Potter through the Peak District (25 minutes) – there are plenty of pretty paths over yonder as well as closer to the site if you’d rather not drive. Ambles are to be had in the grounds too, over by the farm animals or to the play area, where mums and dads are regularly seen supervising the kids in front of a scenic background. When the tiddlers start to get peckish, stroll over to the inn for food. The pub is open from lunchtime till late every day but Monday (there are no breakfasts available). And what about those essential amenities of life? The site has separate ladies' and gents' toilet blocks with showers, as well as a washing-up area.

Electric gravel touring pitch

Liked Everything, we came in our campervan with our 3 autistic children, the site was brilliant for both adults and children, the park was ideal for our 3 to play on, the animals were also brill as they loved seeing them. The pitches were spacious, the toilets and showers were immaculate. We ate in the pub twice in our 3 night stay and the food was amazing, the pies and burgers are huge, but also all fresh ingredients. Although summer holidays it felt peaceful and relaxing being a smaller site. The staff on the grounds and in the pub were really friendly and welcoming, especially one of the groundsman he was amazing with our children (you pretended to be an alien, you know who you are. Thank you) we enjoyed it that much that myself and my husband are returning next week for our one night break (the first in 6 months) would definitely recommend to anybody. The surrounding area is also beautiful definitely wouldn't think you was so close to stoke. See you again soon. Thanks again for a brill 3 night stay..

Electric gravel touring pitch

Liked Facilities spotless. Old fashioned and lovely pub literally on the site. Check-in was nice and easy. Staff SUPER friendly. Very nice layout with clearly seperated bays, fresh water and EHU easy accessible

Disliked When setting up the gravel pitches it wouldve been easy to make them more level to save motorhomes and campervans the hassle of using ramps. There was a bit of rubbish in the bushes at our spot.

Electric optional grass touring pitch

Liked Friendly and helpful owner. Sms with welcome and possibility to ask something. Owner came to our place and explain a walk in the neighbourhood 👍

Disliked When we arrived was the owner not present and we asked the girls behind the bar if there was a place for is. We had to fill a thing on internet. That was not so fine.

From the manager: Hi
Thanks for your review ,
I am presuming you came to our site without booking up on Pitchup ,
When you went into the Pub the Girls would have asked you to create a Booking so you could be verified on the System . This is normal practice
Hope that makes sense ,

Regards Team Charlies

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked Loved the size of the site, the fact that no matter where our son was we could see him. Friendly members of staff. Clean and tidy pitches which were relatively even. Facilities were great and obviously cleaned and restocked regularly. Free WiFi too!

Disliked No on site shop for the forgotten essentials and I believe the nearest shop is a mile or so away of country road. Ultimately we didn’t want to unhook and drive away our van away an hour after setting up so did without but the lack of a shop saved us a fortune with our 5 year old..no shop no unnecessary spending!

From the manager: Hi Nicola,
Thank you for your Great review and Lovely comments , its much appreciated.
Glad all was up to your expectations and you liked what you we could give.
Soz we have no Shop but its hard to give that really on our small site it does not justify staffing it really , but there are always item available from the Pub Lol
Be good to see you again in the future ,

Great pub at top of site with cool outdoor sports bar.
Secure site
Farm animals
Small Park for kids
Steam Train railway close by

Disliked Understaffed on a Friday and Saturday evening for food orders so couldn’t order food at 6pm or anytime after, had to go and cook our own food last minute and take it back up to the pub (which they were fine with).

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Marc .
Thanks for the great review and comments .
Soz about the Food situation but that's what happens when the food is to GOOD Lol
We are in the process of Building a outside Kitchen Facility which should give a better scope for more Food services .
Hope to see you again

Electric optional grass touring pitch

Liked Lovely setting. Very peaceful with really nice toilet and shower facilities. Easy check-in and friendly staff. We didn't eat at the pub as it was fully booked upon our arrival and we hadn't prebooked but pub was atmospheric. Only stayed 1 night on route to North Wales but would definitely stay again if in the area.

Liked Staff friendly and kids loved play area.

Disliked Grass needed cutting on non electric hook up field.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi ,
Glad you enjoyed your stay ,
Ref the grass on the non electric field it was not cut due to the weather been wet plus we get a negative response if it’s cut in wet weather then treads in campers Units !
Hope that makes sense .
You are only one of a hand full of people who said they would not stop again out of over 700 reviews .

Local attractions

This is an ace base for trips to Alton Towers (20 minutes’ drive) for folk who fancy riding rollercoasters like the Nemesis and Oblivion. Spend one day scampering among the top-class attractions here, then slow things down the next with countryside explores. The Peak District National Park (around 25 minutes) is full of walking paths, while other spots like Trentham Gardens (20 minutes) are top for traipsing round too. If checking out cheeky creatures is more your bag, head to Trentham Monkey Forest (20 minutes) and wander among the free-roaming animals. Around 140 Barbary macaques live in the woodlands and meadows here – make sure to look up and spot them swinging through the trees. Once you’ve snapped pics of the primates, set your sights on some of the market towns scattered around the area. Stone, a settlement on the Trent and Mersey Canal (15 minutes), is well-regarded for its food and drink options, while Cheadle (55 minutes), just outside the wood-covered Churnet Valley and the scenic Staffordshire Moorlands, is worth stopping in too.
