  • Simple adults-only campsite edging the Peak District National Park
  • A 10-minute drive to Leek; 20 minutes to Alton Towers theme park
  • Moorland views and close to hiking and cycling routes
With spectacular views to the Staffordshire moorlands, Wellington Farm is a tiny, basic campsite aimed at adults looking for a bit of peace and quiet to unwind. Spacious pitches on the four-acre site means there’s plenty of privacy for everyone, so you can sleep in late, eat whenever and potter around the fields. In short, do exactly what you want. With miles of public footpaths around (one starts at the farm) and the Peak District National Park accessible in less than 10 minutes’ walk, this is a fab base for serious hikers. Cyclists should be happy too, with many off-road routes including the Manifold Way, following the course of the former Leek and Manifold Valley Light Railway. Still got a bit of energy left? Take a ramble through the rugged scenery of the Roaches (15 minutes' drive away) or trot around Tittesworth Reservoir (10 minutes). For more leisurely times, go birdwatching at Coombe Valley or Gun Moor, or meet rather larger beasts on a walking safari at Peak Wildlife Park (10 minutes). If you want to bring along a barbecue for your evening meals, a 10-minute drive takes you to the historic market town of Leek, where you can trawl the Wednesday food market or source bits and bobs from the supermarkets. But should cooking not be part of your plan, there are a couple of decent foodie pubs within a 10-minute drive of the campsite. Please note that the entrance track is quite steep in places. Most vehicles have no issues on arrival, but some two-wheel drives towing caravans have struggled. If that sounds like you, mention it to the owners in advance and they should be able to help.

Local attractions

The Peak District National Park (10 minutes’ walk) may be the gateway to scores of walks and cycling trails, but you might also like to play a round at Westwood Golf Club (15 minutes’ drive), or explore the meadows and waterways of Deep Hayes Country Park (20 minutes). There’s plenty of local history to discover too. Cliffside Thor’s Cave (20 minutes) has remnants of prehistoric life as well as smashing Peak District views, while cute Edale village (45 minutes) is famous for sealing itself off from the world during the Great Plague of 1666. The Capability Brown gardens at gorgeous Chatsworth House (45 minutes and itself packed with arty treasures) make a great picnic pitstop, as do the ruins of hilltop Mow Cop Castle (40 minutes). And of course, one of Staffordshire’s biggest draws is Alton Towers Resort (20 minutes), where you can spend the day scaring yourselves silly on thrill rides and recovering with a pint in cosy theme-park taverns.
