Great Family Holidays Since 1974: the Shingler family welcomes you to Lower Lacon Caravan Park
Play area by orange area and top field
Children can play for hours and make lots of new friends
Play park by one of the camping fields

  • Family site one mile from the market town of Wem
  • Within 25 minutes' drive of Shrewsbury, Ellesmere and Whitchurch
  • Two play areas, crazy golf and a supermarket with off-licence on site
Opened by the Shingler family in 1974, Lower Lacon Caravan Park is just a mile from the stunning market town of Wem in north Shropshire. With train and bus services in Wem being within walking distance, the site has easy access to plenty of local attractions, including Shrewsbury, Ellesmere and Whitchurch (which are all within 25 minutes' drive of the site if you'd rather take your own transport). The site has a very convenient and secure set-up, with a barrier system, 24-hour emergency cover and a warden and owners living on site. There are two play areas on site, as well as crazy golf and a heated outdoor swimming pool with a toddler's paddling pool (please take note that the pools are only open during high season for pre-booked sessions only, and weather dependent). For extra entertainment, the J.A.K.K.S. Barn (open on weekends during low season and closed during winter) has a bar and occasional family discos. When you're hungry, pick up snacks at the on-site supermarket, which also has an off-licence. The J.A.K.K.S. café and takeaway (open on weekends during low season and closed during winter) are on hand for further refreshments. By the pool, there's the choice of CJ's Snack Bar (weather dependent) and the adults-only Windmill Lounge Bar (only open during high season or on weekends during low season and winter), which has a marquee. Lower Lacon Caravan Park has a pretty cool backstory, having started as the back entrance for the Aston Park American Army Camp, a munitions and distribution depot built in World War II (on land purchased from owner Clive's paternal grandfather). During its development, a D8 bulldozer sank in the soil, so the land was covered with three feet of solid materials from local foundries; this can make placing pegs difficult but it also means that the team have never had to turn away any customers due to bad weather as the pitches stay firm.

What customers say

A tidy, friendly, spacious site with heaps of family fun: pool, play areas, entertainment. Generous pitches, clean facilities, helpful staff get thumbs up. Downsides: dated loos/showers, occasional noise, some doggy restrictions.

Electric grass pitch (large, no pets)

Liked Tent pitches were close to clubhouse

Good quality park

Decent sized pitches

Disliked Lack of children’s entertainment (which consisted of a DJ from 7pm that favoured playing reggae music until people requested something more relevant.

Main toilet blocks toilets were temperamental on flushing

Toilet cabins were extremely dirty

Check in was overly complicated and time consuming 10minites waiting to check in then a further 10 minutes waiting for the warden. We were given a poorly printed unclear map, and told to wait on the pitch until the warden came over to tell us where to pitch, the pitch numbers weren’t clear or obvious so we waited until the warden was done talking to other guests that had just turned up.

Wasps everywhere. Literally constantly whilst outside the tent

Extremely noisy site. People making noise and music playing until midnight. No sign of the warden. And then noise again at 6.30am with parents unable to keep their kids quiet.

The site has potential to be so much better, but just felt tired and outdated

Wouldn’t be going there again.

Electric grass pitch (large)

Liked Area it was situated in. Most staff friendly.

Disliked The pitch ground was thin layer of patchy grass underneath was stone or concrete almost impossible to get tent pegs into. You needed substantial tent pegs to be able to knock them into the ground

Electric grass pitch (small)

Liked Great for kids, they are able to roam and explore. The alpaca's and goats add some nice variety. Onsite takeaway and shop are great value. Entertainment is great.

Disliked Our pitch was dirty when we arrived.

Electric grass pitch (small)

Liked Animals around the site were nice to see. (Goats/Alpacas)
The adult bar was a good idea as the kids barn was a little bit too Benidorm meets Butlins for us.
Pitches were great size- but do remember your rock pegs!
Didn’t go in pool but looked clean enough. Maybe a little regimented with the time slots.

Disliked Shower block was a little dated. Also the light in there is automatic so didn’t enjoy a shower in the dark!
Location isn’t near to anything on foot. Wem is closest town and doesn’t have a right lot going on.

Electric grass pitch (large, no pets)

Liked Fantastic site. Lots to do. Bar, cafe, play areas, mini golf, outdoor pool and on site shop. Plenty of toilets and shower facilities. We were located on orange field. Very busy site when we arrived but well managed. Pitches were well laid out clearly marked and numbered. Will definitely return.

Disliked Some families were not always respectful of the 11pm quiet hours letting their children run around screaming until midnight.

Local attractions

Shropshire is a pretty peaceful place without too many crowds most of the time, so grab your chance to get stuck into a few gentle activities like floating on the Shropshire Union Canal, river Severn or Llangollen canal (50 minutes' drive). The site is also within striking distance of Ironbridge Gorge (45 minutes), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Adore exploring the history of a place? Take yourself to spots like the British Ironwork Centre (35 minutes), Blists Hill Victorian Town (40 minutes) and Royal Air Force Museum Midlands (40 minutes), or pretend like you've gone back in time at Attingham Park (25 minutes), a National Trust site. The Quarry (half an hour) is a gorgeous spot for a little stroll in Shrewsbury, and if you fancy something a bit more challenging, Hawkstone Park Follies (five minutes) has sandstone hills and caves. If you're looking for activities that'll entertain the kids, however, make a beeline for Hoo Zoo and Dinosaur World (35 minutes). The site is near plenty of historic Shropshire towns and villages, from Hodnet (10 minutes) and Ellesmere (20 minutes) to Market Drayton (20 minutes) and Oswestry (40 minutes).
