  • Off-grid campsite with spectacular views over the Shropshire Hills
  • Ironbridge Valley of Invention 25 minutes’ drive; hiking from site
  • Spacious grass pitches in a dark-skies area; shops 15 minutes’ drive
Are you ready for a real off-grid experience? One with spectacular views over hills on the edge of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with lots of walking options right from the camping field… and the chance to see buzzards or red kites flying overhead? If it’s yes to all those questions, then haste ye to Spring Field Dark Skies Camping. On-site numbers are kept low to provide spacious pitches and privacy for all guests, and keep the ‘away-from-it-all’ vibe of the place. Facilities are simple: solar power for the electricity and a private water supply (there’s also wifi – the kids will be pleased). In terms of amenities, there are flushing toilets with hot hand-washing facilities and separate grey and black water disposal available. There is also a drive-on grey water point for motorhomes. If you’re keen to hone your barbecuing skills, pick up gourmet treats from the well-known butcher in Much Wenlock (15 minutes by car) to grill on the communal firepit. Otherwise there are several traditional pubs serving good grub within about the same distance, and Shrewsbury’s only 35 minutes away for big nights out. By the way, the site’s in a dark-skies area, so if you get a clear night, don’t miss the chance to see the stars glittering in the heavens far above you. It's also eco-friendly: a solar installation provides all electrical supplies and water come from an underground aquifer. Keep your eyes peeled, as the open field management attracts many birds of prey. There are many more eco features, including eco-friendly mowers and recycling facilities.

Electric optional grass tent pitch (backpacker, small, two person)

Liked: Incredibly secluded campsite on the doorstep of the Shropshire Hills AONB, we through-hiked the area and couldn't have stumbled upon a more picturesque view and beautiful, fully off-grid site. The fact that all electrical systems are powered by solar was such welcome information, and the facilities were great. Pleased we made the stop, and will be sure to frequent the campsite again.

Electric optional grass campervan pitch (small, four person)

Liked: The site is small and has beautiful views of the Shropshire countryside. We liked hiring the fire pit for the evening - it made a real difference to our stay and we cooked our tea over it. Free WiFi. Two portaloos on site with a sink and hot water. James, our host, was friendly and helpful. A perfect one-night getaway.

Disliked: Not the cleanest of loos but I was glad they were there!

Electric optional grass campervan pitch (small, four person)

Liked: Beautiful views and clean, quiet campsite with owners that were friendly and went above and beyond to make everyone’s stay the best it could be. We were offered to move to an alternative pitch if we wanted but were very happy with our spot under a beautiful tree. I also saw the owner helping a young couple to put up their tent who were struggling with the windy weather. Our little dog loved her first stay in the van and walking in the woods. Lovely place and even lovelier owners.

From the manager: It was a rough, windy weekend and I think you had the best shelter of all. We look forward to your next visit and just let us know if you want to reserve that pitch.

Electric optional grass tent or trailer tent pitch (large)

Liked: Beautiful views across stunning Shropshire hills, small quiet back to basics site with decent size pitches (all with super views), really friendly and helpful hosts, each pitch has its own standpipe for drinking water, option of using the lovely central campfire for BBQs or hiring your own fire pit/BBQ and wood for your pitch, genuine eco site

Electric optional grass tent pitch (medium)

Liked: Camp site was great. Beautiful views, good facilities, nice owners.

Disliked: My only criticism is that the price to rent a fire pit was very expensive. We were there 2 nights and it cost us £56!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review and your comment of good facilities. Yes our fire-pits are £28.00 per night to hire and is clearly posted and advertised. Hire includes a full load of logs and lighting kindling delivered to your pitch. Collection next morning for emptying and cleaning ready for the next campers hire. The communal firepit in the middle is FREE (with or without your own logs) so its a personal choice. You could bring your own fire-pit providing it is safe and wont burn our grass. Fire-pits are an optional extra we offer at the clients choice either when booking on-line or when you arrive at the site. There are no hidden costs.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass campervan pitch (small, four person)

Liked: Stayed two nights in our campervan on this very peaceful site with fabulous views Our well kept grass pitch was very spacious with hook up and drinking water Owners Linda and Malcolm were helpful and informative Currently no showers but these are being worked on for next year We will definitely be returning

Disliked: Although we managed by using a kettle there is no hot water in wash up area

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your nice comments which are appreciated. We are aware of the lack of hot water in the wash-up area. As a Certificated site, our planning permission does not permit permanent static buildings so our wash-up area is consequently outside, not ideal. We haven't been able to find a suitable "safe" water heater that is approved for use outside. We will be installing shower units in a custom mobile trailer over this winter. If we can incorporate another wash-up area next to the shower unit we will endeavour to incorporate it.

Electric optional grass campervan pitch (small, four person)

Liked: Nice flat pitches, nice views, clean toilet facilities.

Disliked: It states campfires are allowed but then aren't really allowed, except for the communal one in the centre of the site, or if you pay them £28 to rent a firepit they have. We have a pretty standard firepit but the owner came to inspect it and deemed it borderline too low and he didn't want it to damage the campsite grass. Luckily, the motorhome pitch next to ours wasn't occupied and we were allowed to place our firepit on the gravel there. Otherwise, we wouldn't have had permission to use our firepit. There are only two toilets for the whole campsite. There were times when there were queues. No traffic of campers/motorhomes is allowed after 9pm so we had to rush back from dinner with family in Shrewsbury to not get scolded. It states on page that the pitches are spacious but we found them to be more cramped than your average campsite.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Safe campfires are allowed. All we ask is that you do not burn our grass. We have a duty of care to all our campers any many firepits or BBQ's sold are downright dangerous. We try hard to keep our field in good condition for all to enjoy and our echo credentials are generally appreciated by our guests. If we allowed everyone to use disposable BBQ's or low ones, they would damage the field and it would look terrible. Lighting an open fire on private land is a privilege and not a right and we ask to inspect all firepits and BBQ's before they are lit.. We offer the hire of a fire pit which we ourselves fortified with heat proof shields and the price includes a large bag of logs, tinder and a flamer. People are generally grateful as it means they don't have to carry heavy supplies. They can alternatively use the free large fire pit in the centre. They are also advised that they can use disposable BBQ's on the central area which has a safe, grass free area. As you stated, the site wasn't full as we gave you the additional hard standing pitch to place your fire pit on and you had a spacious area between that and where you parked your campervan to put out your awning.Clearly you were spread out over 2 well spaced sites. We do stipulate no driving on the field after 9pm to protect children and to give other guests peace and quiet. If we didn't give a cut off time then guests could drive on when ever it suited them without respect for other guests. Please read our previous review. Most guests appreciate this. As regards queues for toilets, this is not something we have seen or been mentioned in any of our reviews. We do have a new toilet/shower block which will be commissioned over the winter to offer showers to campers.

Local attractions

If you’re an active family looking for sporty pursuits, whizz around on quad bikes, try an archery session or improve your aim while shooting clays at The Edge Adventure Activities (15 minutes’ drive). Go pony trekking in the Shropshire Hills (25 minutes), or take to the water in a kayak on the River Severn (half an hour). And of course, there are loads of hiking trails to explore on foot or by bike (an electric bike might make some of those hills easier though). Sneak a bit of history into the holiday mix with a potter around the ruins at Wroxeter Roman City (20 minutes), where you can also see a recreated Roman townhouse, and move forward to the 18th century at National Trust - Attingham Park Estate: Cronkhill (15 minutes) to admire the Italianate villa built by mega-architect John Nash. To continue the cultural theme, plan to spend a day discovering the numerous museums and attractions at Ironbridge Valley of Invention (25 minutes), where highlights include the chance to get dressed up in period hats at Blists Hill Victorian Town, pull a locomotive down the track at Engenuity or go deep underground in a tunnel oozing with bitumen.
