Rural Camping Leisure: Smart accommodation in a peaceful location

General

  • Modern, family-friendly accommodation in a peaceful hillside setting
  • A 10-minute drive from Bridgnorth; 25 minutes from Ironbridge
  • Barbecues available to hire; next to a local farm shop

With a name that neatly sums up what's in store, Rural Camping Leisure is a stand-out stopover spot in the peaceful Shropshire countryside. Handily, this well-located site is close to the A458, so you can sort trips to nearby historic towns like Bridgnorth and Ironbridge in a jiff. Historic days out and wide open spaces, meanwhile are supplied by the Dudmaston Estate, a National Trust-managed property five minutes away by car.

The huts are modern, cosy and can sleep up to four (please bring your own bedding). Finished in natural wood inside and out, they also blend in rather nicely with their rural surrounds. Mains electricity, tea/coffee making facilities and a heater are available in each unit and two well-maintained toilet and shower blocks are on hand a few steps away.

And for food? Rural Camping Leisure has barbecues that can be hired by the day and plenty of outdoor furniture where you can tuck into self-cooked bites – head to the farm shop next door to stock up on a range of all-natural ingredients. For bulk buys, call in at the supermarkets in Bridgnorth (10 minutes' drive away).

In search of something rich and fruity to wash that down with? The site is a mile away from a popular pub called The Cider House (said to be one of the half-dozen such apple-centric inns left in all of England…).

We had the smaller of the huts. However this was plenty big enough for 3 people. The hut was spotless clean, and so were the shared facilities. The beds were very comfortable too. My sisters and I couldn't fault the place. 5*. Already planning our next trip.

Steep steps from huts down to kitchen and toilet, all fine but with a toddler staying in the hut directly opposite, perhaps a stair gate might have saved some anxiety!

A nice warm welcome from the manager who showed us where everything was and was helpful throughout our stay. I stayed in hut 1, with my two sons aged 11 and 12 the kettle in the hut was a nice surprise with a running water drinking tap designated next to the hut. Clean toilet and shower area with each hut being designated a shower/toilet. Brilliant communal washing up area with fridge (designated shelf for each hut) and a microwave. Table, chairs and bbq designated to each hut. Grass area for children to play (bring your own football, bat & ball) as it is just grass. Beautiful views of the surrounding area and horses in the field. We had a great stay and really enjoyed our time together here.

As a family we have never been camping or glamping before and have just returned from a BRILLIANT 3 night stay! The hut was comfortable with enough space for us. The electricity sockets and kettle in the hut were a bonus and the fact that a toilet is allocated to each hut is great. The showers and toilets were clearly cleaned regularly. It was so lovely to have an allocated seating area and BBQ for some private outside time and having a shelf in the fridge was really useful to us. We enjoyed it so much that we stayed an extra night! Thank you to Mike for being so helpful - we hope to return.

Booked a last minute Monday - Friday stay after a disaster with our original booked holiday.

Had a great stay here its well placed for visiting, Bridgnorth, Ironbridge and Birmingham (we got the train in from Stourbridge £15 for 4). Would recommend a visit to Highley engine shed to see the steam trains.

The huts are clean and very comfortable, toilets/showers are clean. The inside washing up area has a fridge with a shelf dedicated to each hut. The views from the huts are beautiful, especially early morning.

    Farm shop next door

Local attractions

The problem you'll face when you leave your comfy berth will most likely be deciding what to do first. Will you spend day one poking around UNESCO-listed Ironbridge (25 minutes' drive), bounding over the various regal landscapes of the Dudmaston Estate (five minutes) or whizzing up and down on the Bridgnorth Cliff Railway (10 minutes)?

Once you've tried out some of those best-known local haunts, you'd do well to follow up with a picnic and snooze at Severn Valley Country Park (15 minutes), a spacious stretch of reclaimed industrial land that's been transformed into a hub for all sorts of wildlife. If these riverside grounds appeal, you could also make a 35-minute detour to Ludlow to check out a handsome Norman castle on the banks of the Terne.

Keep things chilled with a leisurely tour of the ruins at Much Wenlock Abbey (20 minutes) or by heading to the Shropshire Hills for a wholesome hike along the attractive Long Mynd path (40 minutes). Once you've treated/subjected the kids to a fair bit of exercise, keep them sweet with a trip to aptly-named Exotic Zoo (25 minutes) or Telford Steam Railway (25 minutes).

Must see

  • Royal Air Force Museum Cosford (15.7 kilometres)
  • Enginuity (17.2 kilometres)
