  • Self-contained glamping pods floating on a canal off the River Soar
  • A 25-minute drive from Nottingham and The National Water Sports Centre
  • Units have beds, basic kitchenettes, bathrooms and a deck for fishing
Like the thought of being lulled to sleep every night by the gentle rippling motion of one of the River Soar’s canals? You’ve come to the right place: the self-contained pods at Redhill Marina sit right on the water... for a floating glamping time on top of the canal. Each unit has decking with a table and chairs, so you can spy the tree-lined scenery from your personal outdoor space or get out a fishing rod and attempt to reel in a catch. Inside, the living areas are smartly set up with a sofa bed that can be folded away during the day and a kitchenette with a microwave for quick meals. A separate bathroom contains a shower and toilet. If you can bear to leave this excellent setup, catch a train into the centre of Nottingham from the East Midlands Parkway station about a 25-minute walk or five-minute drive away, or drive there in 25 minutes from the site. And once there? Admire artwork in the castle gallery, saunter through the subterranean City of Caves or sign up for spooky ghost tours around the National Justice Museum. Rather roam in the rural surrounds than stroll across the city? Walks can be had directly from the pod, including to Kegworth and its pub a 45-minute wander along the river. If you want to get around on the water instead, canal boat trips are often available (just ask Dave at the site for details). For more aquatic activities, a whitewater course for canoeing, kayaking, rafting and tubing, and a waterpark with a cableway for wakeboarding, paddleboarding and open-water swimming, are at the National Water Sports Centre within a 25-minute drive. And if you’d prefer to watch other people get wet while you stay dry, the complex’s regatta lake regularly hosts dragon boat races and triathlons...

Local attractions

There really is no need to veer far from the water when checking out other sights in Nottinghamshire: the Attenborough Nature Reserve a 25-minute drive away, for example, are where to go for birdwatching from specially set up hides in the wetlands. See sand martins and starlings here then head to Colwick Country Park (25 minutes) for cycle rides beside the River Trent or travel further (an hour onwards) to amble through the trees in Robin Hood's home of Sherwood Forest. When it’s almost time to return to your own serene abode on the canal, you could always travel back via Nottingham for ice skating at the Motorpoint Arena or stop by the city's racecourse for a flutter...
