The house and grounds

  • Riverside site in grounds of a 17th-century house in Nottinghamshire
  • Close to Sherwood Forest and 25 miles from Nottingham
  • Space for outdoor activities; rope swing and stepping stones
You'll sense the history all around you at The Old Vicarage, from the old house to the remains of the water mill in the river bed. Stays here are in the grounds of a 17th-century house in the village of Elkesley, six miles from Worksop and 25 miles from Nottingham. Its grounds run down to the banks of the Poulter river, and are lined with stands of acacia, sycamore, ash and oak trees which were originally donated to the first vicar by the Duke of Newcastle in the 1830s. There's plenty of space around the site for traditional outdoor activities, with a rope swing and stepping stones over the shallow river and a bridge that's perfect for playing Pooh Sticks. In the surrounding area there are animal parks and nature reserves to walk around, or to head back further in time, you could take one of the trails through ancient Sherwood Forest, around quarter of an hour's drive away. Every bank holiday, the site opens up their Cave Bar, a cool little space built into an exposure of 500-million-year-old sandstone, with a chillout room, TV room and games, plus an outdoor terrace for sipping drinks out in the sunshine. Other amenities include a washing-up area and bathrooms with plentiful hot showers, toilets and baby changing facilities.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Beautiful surroundings
Shallow river for kids to play in
Campsite fairly clean

Disliked: Staff unfriendly
No hot shower
Police turned up 3 police cars and an undercover car with police dogs looking for someone who lives there so was a bit worrying
Expensive firewood that burns too quickly (pallet wood/ offcuts) and not allowed to burn own wood
Selling eggs bought at coop for 24p in the reduced section for £2.50 😂
Although well away from main road we can still hear the road very loudly especially at night when in tents, so not very peaceful at night.

From the manager: Can you please contact us about which member of staff was unfriendly please.
The shower problem was fixed this morning. You only made us aware at 9pm , when our maintenance man had already finished 3 hours earlier!
There were no police dogs onsite. It was a neighbour problem , not looking for someone who lives there!
The only person who lives there is the owner.
You aren’t allowed to burn your own wood so we know it’s safe to burn!
We are not selling eggs bought from the co-op ! The eggs are from our NINE rescue chickens which you would have seen onsite of which we get 9 eggs per day! We reused and recycled the egg boxes! We would not sell out of date eggs!
There is a slight hum in the background and it isn’t very loud at all.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We loved the scenery, it is perfect for children to explore the ford, with rope swings, play area and other outdoor equipment to make use of.

You could buy a campfire for the whole stay which was fab.

Disliked: The facilities were less than adequate. They were not cleaned the whole time we stayed for the 3 nights. The toilets were broken leaving 1 toilet which often didnt have toilet roll. Showers were blocked, which resulted in over spill. This added to the un -cleanliness of the facilities.

In the washing up area the floor had holes in, leaving It dangerous. There was no hot water to wash up with and no plug for the sink. Bins were over flowing.

Children were left unsupervised to run around tents , repeatedly at 10pm at night, tripping over guy ropes, some were as young as 3years old. Parents had no clue where their children were.

This is our 3rd time and the site has gone down hill and unfortunately likely to be our last time unless we hear there has been an improvement on the facilities.

From the manager: Hi
The toilets were cleaned morning and evening and checked regularly throughout the day, unfortunately with a river running through our grounds they are going to get muddy, this is a lack of respect for our site and what we work so hard for is the issue here, we leave a mop and have signs up stating to leave the toilets in the way you wish to find them. People wouldn’t do this in their own homes!

Unfortunately the toilets had to partially close due to guests onsite flushing sanitary items down the toilet , baby wipes and also a towel/wash cloth, this was not our fault at all. It burnt out the fuse and had broken the pump at the toilets on the other side of the river which will cost us money to replace, which couldn’t be replaced over the bank holiday weekend as the plumbing merchants were not open! This also caused issues at the toilet on the house side of the river as waste is pumped back up towards the other toilets. There were also sanitary items and baby wipes flushed down the toilet there too which our staff had to fish out , and as you can imagine - this is not a job anyone wants to do but they did to make sure we could
Keep half the toilets open!!
As you will know and I’m sure others do too, sanitary items and baby wipes are to be put in the bin, not flushed down toilets and I’m sure people do not do this in their homes which are main drains, nevermind a submersible pump with a macerator blade on which will cut out if a foreign object hits the blade!

Not one guest has come to us this weekend about hot water? If you had told us then we could have sorted this for you instead of you leaving it in a complaint.

The fact children were running unsupervised is a parental issue which people were told about. But this is not a complaint against us! It’s other parents. We cannot tell people how to parent their children.
Our quiet time is 11pm and this is when our walk round was done on all 3 nights over bank holiday!

Would highly recommend & looking forward to returning

Luxury 1 bedroom cabin

Liked: The house we had was really beautiful, well-kept. The house was fully equipped, nothing more needed to be added. The area itself is also charming.

Disliked: Unfortunately the atmosphere maintained by the owners of the property is not nice, being on holiday you are constantly aware of being watched and controlled. It does not seem that this is why you go on holiday.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your comments about the accommodation, we really do appreciate them.
We are sorry that you feel the atmosphere was uncomfortable.

However staff were concerned when you booked your stay for 6 guests (the max capacity for the Log Cabin) and when you arrived you brought 8 guests, and pitched a tent at the side of the Log Cabin without any permission or forewarning. This was also attempted to be hidden by your cars.

As I am sure you aware it is against health and safety to have over occupancy, and is very dangerous for both parties. We must always be aware who is on site in the case of a fire, or accident. Thank you for paying the difference

Local attractions

The surrounding countryside has great places for walks and wildlife-spotting, with trails around the lakes and wetlands of Idle Valley Nature Reserve (15 minutes' drive) and lakes for fishing too. Then there's Sherwood Forest, 25 minutes away: some 450 acres of wildlife among ancient oak trees, alongside a wealth of biking and walking trails to take you through them. Adventure seekers can see it all from the treetops on ropes and wires at Go Ape, and the kids can clamber about at Robin Hood’s Hideout, an acclaimed natural play area. For family antics out of the forest, Sundown Adventure Park (20 minutes) has rides and themed playgrounds for the under-10s and families can also make tracks for Ferry Farm Country Park (45 minutes), to feed lambs, meet pigs and zoom about on go-karts and the adventure playground. An hour away and a major hub since Robin Hood's days, Nottingham still draws the crowds. Tour the castle and the caves, stop for a snifter in Ye Trip To Jerusalem (oldest pub in England, perhaps...), skate on ice at Motorpoint Arena and see what law and order meant in the Sheriff’s days at the National Justice Museum. For further historical wanderings, Creswell Crags presents an array of prehistoric caves in a cracking limestone gorge and Newark's castle, Air Museum and National Civil War Centre sum up the centuries very entertainingly, all around half an hour away.
