  • Pet-friendly back to basics site in the Lincolnshire countryside
  • A 20-minute drive to the Lincolnshire Wolds; half an hour to Skegness
  • Buy fresh eggs on site; chip shop, café, food shop and pubs nearby
Check in for some quality time in the Lincolnshire countryside and strip things back to basics once you settle into the grassy pitches at Old Generals Farm. A friendly family-run site situated alongside a road (don't worry – although busy by day, it's generally quiet during the night), this site is well-situated for an escape to the funfairs and sandy donkey rides of Skegness, half an hour’s drive away, or the bumpy hiking or cycling tracks in the Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, 20 minutes’ drive away. Happily, all pets can enjoy the pitches too, as long as they’re kept on a lead (and cleaned up after, to care for the livestock that graze in the fields when they’re empty). All you need to do is roll up, pick a spot and nestle down for some wild camping, as things are kept pretty basic on site. A communal portable toilet is available a short walk away from the pitches and is available between 9am and 10pm daily; there is no amenities block or chemical disposal point on site, though, so guests are recommended to bring their own portable toilet too. The grassy field is kept nicely rubbish free, as there's a bin provided for dog waste. If you like your mornings sunny side up, buy fresh eggs on site. There's a small farm shop on site which sells fresh produce, milk, bread, cheese, cakes, drinks and snacks. Gifts and pet supplies are also available. You’ll certainly need all of the aforementioned fuel, as this area is a walking and cycling paradise. Power up with chunky chips from the local chip shop and grab any other grub you desire from the bakery and café, diner or two friendly pubs, all within five minutes’ drive of the site. There's also a food shop a 10-minute drive away, if you'd like to take something back with you. Handily, logs and kindling are available to buy on site.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The family and the animals they rescue are lovely. The camping field faces the paddock and we woke up with rheas, ponies and sheep the other side of the fence. There is a quaint farm shop with goodies to take home. The facilities are basic and that is reflected in the price. Its close enough to skegness beach for a day visit and lots of animal centres nearby. Also a pub 5 mins away for meals. Clean portaloo on site. This was a neurodiverse friendly place as an extra bonus and i would definitely recommend and return

Liked: We absolutely LOVED our stay at old generals farm!! Sam and Darren are brilliant, Nothing is too much trouble for them, they're so welcoming and it felt like home from home! My children (18months and 7years) had a brilliant time and really enjoyed being told all about the animals! Despite being a 'back to basics' place my son has declared it THE BEST SITE EVER! I must agree! We were glad to see the toilet not on the field, there's nothing worse than being woken up by a slamming loo door! The farmshop is lovely, We were super surprised at how cheap it was too, The kids really enjoyed picking out their journey home snacks and drinks! We can't wait to come back for a longer stay, 2 nights was not enough to fully enjoy the site and all its surrounding days out! We had chance to pop to Skegness for the day which was lovely and less than half an hour away! I'd honestly just come back for the animals and owners! *There's no WiFi but pitchup wouldn't NOT let me rate it!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Very friendly family run farm. Enough space to pick a spot to pitch Easy routes to explore or to just as a stopover like we did and then stayed an extra night.

Disliked: Toilet could be a little more in the main field but not really a dislike as I know it’s used for the animals when no one is camping there.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The site was clean, tidy and the family were wonderful. Very friendly and happy to help at anytime. We loved their animals too. We had such a great time my 10 YO day cried when we had to leave after just 2 nights!

Disliked: The only change I would make would to be have some facilities for rubbish, we had to take it away with us (except animal waste).

From the manager: Thank you so much for the wonderful review :) It was a pleasure to have you here. As per my email sent just after you left (I know you hadn't seen it at the time of the review) I am so sorry that with all that was going on here on the Friday, that we completely forgot to bring the rubbish bin back up to the camping paddock. Ordinarily there is both a bin for dog waste and normal waste, I can only apologise that one was missing at the time of your stay, had someone mentioned it, we would have rectified this immediately, but i think you were all so lovely that no one said anything, Apologies again, Sam, Darren & Lilly x

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We really enjoyed our 2 night stay with all the animal 😁 What a lovely no frills campsite. We are a couple who work from home with a very lively 6 year old, looking for a break away from the 4 walls of the house. We were only a few minutes down the road from home but we could have been anywhere in the Country. Will definitely be back 😍👍👍

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Loved this back to basics hidden gem With a selection of animals and a lovely little farm shop which was dome out amazingly we wasn't expecting that at all . The owners are really lovely and will definitely be back was just nice to let the children play and know they was safe we had the field to ourselves

Disliked: I wouldn't say we disliked anything Maybe the only thing I thing would make it better would be to have the loo on the camping field rather than next to the farm shop But still wasn't a issue just remember to bring your portable loo

From the manager: Thank you so much for leaving such a lovely review :) And we are so glad you had such a lovely time. We did consider having the portaloo in the camping field, but we didn't want to spoil the 'back to basics' feel and as its our home, we also didn't want to look out of the window and see a portaloo :p Plus with animals grazing the paddock when campers are not onsite, we don't think it would last too long :p x

Local attractions

Feel almost as though you’ve stepped onto Noah’s ark at ARK Wildlife Park & Exotic Animal Sanctuary (15 minutes’ walk). Here, there are exotic reptiles, rescued mammals and bold carnivores waiting around the enclosures. Also nearby, learn the ins and outs of the aeroplanes in the sky at the local Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre (five minutes’ drive). There are several wildlife parks around, each with its own tune. At Wolds Wildlife Park (20 minutes) you can see the big cats up close, and at Lincolnshire Wildlife Park (15 minutes), treat yourself to a trip around the turtle sanctuary and more close encounters with zoo animals. In Skegness, the beach is all geared up for a family-friendly day out, whether it’s go-karting, ten-pin bowling or a walk down the pier. While there aren't so many watersports here, there's plenty over at the Lincolnshire Aquapark and Watersports (half an hour). Will it be paddleboarding, kayaking or pedalos first? On the way, it's a good idea to turn into the Gunby Estate (20 minutes), as this National Trust site has very pretty Victorian walled gardens suited to a leisurely stroll.
