  • Luxury Herefordshire shepherd’s hut with stunning Bircher Common views
  • Croft Castle five minutes’ drive, and Berrington Hall 10 minutes
  • Romantic getaway with a hot tub, firepit, barbecue and rural views
Just the ticket for couples seeking a peaceful countryside hideaway – and one with spectacular views over hills and woodland at that – Shire Escapes is a neat and stylish shepherd’s hut with everything on hand for complete self-sufficiency. With no neighbours and no main road nearby, you could be excused for thinking that you’re miles from anywhere, but in fact the site is in the pretty north Herefordshire village of Yarpole, only 10 minutes’ walk to a community shop and gastro pub. Leominster (10 minutes’ drive) will cover you for any other needs. Step inside the hut to discover a double bed (all bed linen supplied), with a smart TV for bedtime viewing. A modern bathroom has a shower and heated towel rail, and you can cook up meals in the well-equipped kitchenette decked out with fridge, kettle and induction hobs – utensils, crockery and a starter pack of coffee, sugar and tea are also provided, and there’s a breakfast bar to complete the indoor offerings. On warmer days, move outside for leisurely meals and gorgeous panoramas over to Bircher Common from the private terrace. Jump into the hot tub – strategically placed to take advantage of the views – to unwind, and as day transitions to night, cosy up around the firepit and get cooking on the barbecue. Your four-legged pals are welcome to join you, and you can all get lots of exercise as country walks are accessible from the shepherd’s hut.

Local attractions

As well as walks to follow, there’s lots of physical fun on offer locally. At Oaker Wood Leisure (five minutes’ drive), you could stay busy for days quad biking, paintballing or rafting on the woodland lake. Or how about trying your hand at treetop rope courses, zipwires and clay pigeon shooting? If that all sounds too tiring for words, the heathland of Bircher Common is an easy 15 minutes’ hike. When you’re feeling like exploring further afield, have a stroll up to Croft Ambrey Hillfort (15 minutes’ drive) for views over to the Welsh Marches, or through woodland to the impressive waterfall at Water Break-Its-Neck (40 minutes). If you like having a poke around grand houses, there are some big-hitting National Trust-owned properties hereabouts. Tour sumptuous apartments, the chapel and vineyard at 11th-century Croft Castle and Parkland (five minutes), or admire the period costumes displayed in 18th-century grandeur at Berrington Hall (10 minutes), where there are also formal gardens to wander.
