  • Quiet adults-only rural Herefordshire site near the River Wye
  • A 15-minute drive from Hay-on-Wye and Offa’s Dyke Path
  • Walking trails nearby; five minutes' drive from a farm shop
Sling a trusty bag over your shoulder, grab some sturdy shoes and round up your co-adventurers, as walking trails, mountains and market towns are on the cards from The Swan Inn. Close to the River Wye and surrounded by the quiet Herefordshire countryside, this adults-only site is well-based for diving in the Wye Valley scenery. The clue is in the name; on site is The Swan Inn, a pub which serves traditional pub food. It's open from Thursday to Saturday in the evenings (although sometimes it is closed for private hire). A literary plunge is more the tune in Hay-on-Wye (15 minutes’ drive away) – but as well as the famed bookshops and great places to eat, there are canoes and paddleboards for hire. Back on drier land, national trails crisscross this part of the countryside: the Wye Valley Walk is five minutes’ drive away and Offa’s Dyke Path is 15 minutes’ drive away. As you'd expect from this setting the views are pretty splendid (think hills and open farmland with the River Wye running nearby). The site has immediate access to the road going between Hereford and Brecon, so as well as being in a relaxing spot, you’ll be well-connected to other destinations – and the farm shop five minutes’ drive away when you’re looking for some fresh produce to eat.

Electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Nice site. Small, peaceful. And the facilities were spotless. Pub food and beer excellent, just be aware that they are not open every day.

Electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: The owner was lovely, although I only saw her once. I was able to choose my spot.

Disliked: On arrival the two pitches I chose had no electric power to the ehu, so I moved to another, not a huge issue but I had to get my scissors out to cut away the brambles that were over the ehu before I plugged in. On the two days I stayed none of the showers were cleaned/refreshed with hand towels etc.For £70 for two nights I find this poor service. Quite close to A road so traffic noise all day/evening.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The rural location was good.

Disliked: The owner seems to have very little interest in her guests. We also booked a room for my brother and his wife. I also had a telephone conversation with the owner to make sure the booking was confirmed. We were told (seemly rudely) that there was no booking for him! As we traveled from Germany with our camper, I fortunately packed an extra tent, which was then needed. The camping site itself needs some attention, the grass was quite long, and the toilets/shower needed to be cleaned. These things can be better taken into account when the owner shows a little more concern for her guests. I'm afraid I cannot recommend the Swan Inn.

From the manager: Hi Thanks for your review and sorry for your experience But you has booked the wrong hotel for brother and we can’t accept responsibility for that We did speak on the phone briefly but you only asked if I had cancelled a booking which I had not and then you ended the call. If you had have given your name then it would have been clear that you had booked the wrong hotel. Even though this wasn’t our fault we happily have you another pitch for free to accommodate your brother. As for the grass it had just been cut but it feels fast when it rains as often as it does in wales and we can’t cut it when it’s wet so occasionally it is slightly longer then we would also like. Our showers and toilets are cleaned daily, we ask campers to leave them as they would want to find them and provide cleaning essentials in each bathroom so you can clean up after yourselves in a shared space but some of you don’t respect this at all and it’s a real shame We love our guests and if you had of come into the pub I am sure you would have enjoyed the good ale and good food

Good one

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Pitches were good and level

Disliked: Took booking on a Wednesday even though the pub was shut. Not much point booking a campsite with a pub if its closed. Toilet block was quite cobwebby, showers had vary temperatures, overall could have been cleaner.

Electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Quiet little site, we stayed mid week when the on-site pub was closed.

Disliked: During our 2 night stay the facilities were not cleaned. The grass and weeds needed attention around the site and pitches. There was no tv signal, no phone signal and the site Wi-Fi was poor. No walking routes from the site without walking on a extremely busy road with no pavements.

Electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: Peace & quiet. Excellent facilities (showers etc). Compact site. Proximity to the pub.

Disliked: Slight lack of information including the fact that the pub wasn’t serving food. Bar staff had no responsibility for/information about the campsite etc despite being friendly and polite. No walks seemed possible from the enclosed campsite and a busy pavementless road was the only apparent option.

Local attractions

Walking’s certainly one of the go-to pursuits around here, but what kind of trails will you be clobbering? For those long-distance routes, the 136-mile Wye Valley Walk (five minutes’ drive) passes hills and the river, while the 177-mile Offa's Dyke Path (15 minutes) traces the border between Wales and England. There are challenging mountain paths up in the Black Mountains (an hour and 20 minutes) and for easier-going walking or cycling routes through village landscapes, the Black and White Trail (five minutes) should fit the bill. Of course, the Brecon Beacons National Park (50 minutes) is another hiking hub, but other outdoor activities are in full flow here too, from caving to gorge walking. When you fancy sprinkling some history into your stay, Arthur's Stone (10 minutes) has a decent helping, in the form of a Neolithic tomb linked to King Arthur. Hay-on-Wye (10 minutes) has a castle, or there are museums dotted around Hereford (20 minutes), a nice pairing with a distillery trip or shopping outing. And to round off your historical route, perhaps the National Trust’s The Weir Garden (10 minutes) might serve as a digestif, as this historic garden was once under Roman settlement.
