  • Relaxed, family-friendly campsite 10 minutes’ drive from Chepstow
  • Wye Valley National Landscape 15 minutes’ drive; Tintern 20 minutes
  • Communal kitchen and games room; pub in Woolaston 20 minutes’ walk
Halfway between historic Chepstow and seaside Lydney (both 10 minutes’ drive) in Gloucestershire, family-friendly Sheephouse Campsite is handily located for forays into the Forest of Dean and expeditions to gorgeous Tintern Abbey (both 20 minutes). Everything about this laidback site is designed to make life easy for you. There are no firm arrival or departure times, and no set pitches on the more-or-less level camping field – which has views over to the River Severn, by the way – so family groups and friends can pitch up together. Your younger offspring can busy themselves on the climbing frame and slide, while teens may well head straight to the games room with table-tennis and pool tables, as well as a chill-out area for hanging out with new pals and USB charging points for your devices. The simple shared kitchen has a washing-up sink, freezer, kettle and a table and chairs for eating if the weather is not up to alfresco dining. Woolaston (five minutes’ drive/20 minutes’ walk) has a couple of farm shops for picking up bits to barbecue (bring your own), or you could abandon the car and stroll down to the pub, which does a good line in curries, served both in-house and as takeaways.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Great facilities and close to local shop. The pitch size was a great benefit too.

Disliked I packed up and left at 1:35am due to a group having zero camping etiquette and not lowering the volume. I got fed up and went home after trying to get some sleep for several hours. Ground rules need to be set. I go camping to get a relaxing time away.I shouldn't be waking up in my own bed due to selfish people.

From the manager: We do try to ensure all our campers have a nice time with us. We are generally around for any issues and people are free to contact us 24/7. We were on site with the campers at 11pm that evening due to a party being held by our neighbours and we were concerned that campers might be being disturbed. At this time, the campsite was quite quiet.

Pitches fairly level. Small games room for pool and table tennis.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked A beautiful campsite. The hosts, we're there to greet us, they were around a lot if you needed anything. Very clean, small kitchen with a kettle, ideal for me as I'm an early bird so I could go and make a cuppa without disturbing anyone. Some reviews said about the noise of traffic but it didn't bother us. It depends if you're used to it. We will definitely go back.

Disliked There wasn't anything to dislike.

From the manager: Hi, Thank you so much for your lovely review. We are so pleased that you liked camping with us.

Loved our stay! We will definitely be coming back :)

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Really friendly hosts! Clean facilities and decent flat pitch. WiFi that works! Absolutely loved the relaxed atmosphere and no pressure to pack up and leave by a set time! We will definitely be coming back :)

Disliked A little shady being pitched near the trees when the sun is out (but can also work as a blessing when too hot!) - picking at straws really, nothing so bad to put us off at all

From the manager: Hi, thank you for your lovely review. We do try to be as relaxed as possible and allow campers to have a leisurely time.

Laid back...arrive and leave anytime!

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch (maximum 6 metres)

Liked Lovely friendly owners. Very well kept site. Nice pitch by the hedge, some pitches would need levels. Near to a small airfield. The facilities are clean and well stocked. There was even washing up liquid! Push button hot showers that could do with a seat! Games room too! Good value for money.

Disliked Entrance is very steep off the road which could cause larger vehicles to ground out. Overhanging trees may also be a problem. The site is near the A48 which is quite noisy.

From the manager: Hi, thank you for your lovely review. We do try and keep everything clean and tidy and try to ensure that everyone has a lovely camping break.

Will visit again !

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Great stay at the Sheephouse , helpful communication when booking , lovely greeting on arrival Miriam and Tim were very friendly felt very welcome and super accommodating. The site itself really nice calm quiet and felt safe ( would stay here as a solo female) , slight traffic noise in the background and a cockerel in the morning but nothing to disturb you ! Facilities kept lovely and clean and topped up! Kitchen equipped with an electric kettle was a life saver when we realised we had packed up the stove before leaving for our final coffee top up!
Indoor games social area with pool table ping pong and seating was great for our late evening board games (brought our own). Great for poor weather or cooler evenings
Wonderful farm shop cafe 1.2 m up the road well worth a visit or 5! Sunday car boot in the adjacent field was a good fun! If only I didn’t have so far to take it home!

Good range of walks not too far away ! Devils pulpit has some beautiful views and not too strenuous perfect for our little legged dog!

Recommended to many and will visit again
Would love to host a larger friend group here

Disliked Only possible improvements is the shower button running time could do with being extended
The game room could benifit from another a couple of new sofas to make a cosy corner to play games on softer seating :)

From the manager: Hi, Thank you for your lovely review. It would be great to have you come and visit us again. Especially if you bring your friends!!!

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Tim, the owner was very welcoming and informative on arrival.
Clean showers and toilets. Lovely little wash up area, that you can wash up or eat dinner in if wet.
My 8 year old loved the games room. Tim was always available if any problems.
Beautiful scenery and close to local amenities.
I would have rated a 10 but the campsite is near a main road, which can be noisy. However, would come to the campsite again despite this!

Disliked Main road noise.

Local attractions

Cyclists have easy access to the Wye Valley Greenway (20 minutes by bike), or you can up the physical ante with climbing and abseiling at waterside Symonds Yat (35 minutes). Hikers should grab their boots and head off into the Wye Valley National Landscape (15 minutes’ drive) to follow sections of the scenic Wye Valley Walk along the river banks. Kids unwilling to walk? Tempt them with colourful art installations on the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail (25 minutes), or let them have a run around in the moss-covered undergrowth at Puzzlewood (15 minutes). If little legs tire, you can all hop aboard the Forest of Dean Railway (10 minutes) to chug through the woodland by heritage train. Clearwell Caves (15 minutes) will also intrigue most children with its network of underground caverns once mined for iron ore; today a self-guided tour leads to a beautifully illuminated and ice-cold subterranean lake. Learn more about local heritage with a visit to spectacular Tintern Abbey (20 minutes), with its photogenic setting by the River Wye, or take a look around medieval Chepstow Castle (10 minutes) on its craggy hilltop.
