  • Relaxed family-run site in the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley
  • Near Clearwell Caves, Puzzlewood, Cannop Ponds and Go Ape
  • Space to play, huge grassy pitches and close to a forest
Picture your next break among green space, woodland walks and cycling trails in the peaceful woodland setting of the famed Forest of Dean, on the edge of the market town of Coleford… You'll get a warm welcome at this relaxed, family-run and family-friendly park, in an area surrounded by ancient castles and abbeys, smashing scenery and miles of waymarked walking and biking trails. As Greenacres Campsite is right in the middle of the Forest of Dean, across the road from a woodland and within walking distance of the River Wye, it's in a good spot for fishing, bike rides and long woodland strolls, as well as easy access to attractions such as Clearwell Caves, Puzzlewood, Cannop Ponds and Go Ape at Mallards Pike Lake. Set in a field that stretches across two acres within an 11-acre smallholding, pitches are spacious, level and grassy, and the park is surrounded by huge mature trees that provide good shade and shelter from the elements. Kids should be kept very well occupied at the excellent playground less than five minutes' stroll away, where there's also plenty of space to for ball games and dog walking. Barbecues and campfires are allowed: most handy if you land yourself a fish or two in the Wye or decide to pick up a few sausages in Coleford… Otherwise, there's a good traditional English pub in Newland, a short walk away, and another in Staunton within a 30-minute woodland ramble. The wider local area has plenty of pubs, restaurants and takeaways (many of which are happy to deliver straight to the site).

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Nice clean shower and toilet block. There was a cafe on site with food/drinks which is useful. I think they had breakfast croissants too.

Disliked: Couldn't choose your pitch. I had some people quite close to me and could hear their conversation. I was on the side nearer the wash block but wouldn't have liked being far away on the other side of field.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave us your feedback — we're really pleased to hear you appreciated the clean shower and toilet block, and found the on-site café and breakfast options useful!

We’re sorry to hear that you weren’t entirely happy with the pitch allocation. While we don’t offer pitch selection when booking online, we always do our best to accommodate preferences where we can. If you'd let us know during your stay that you'd prefer to be in a different spot, we’d would have moved you if we could so please do bear that in mind in the future.

Please feel free to give us a call when booking and we will reserve your preferred pitch for you if we can.

We really hope to welcome you back again soon!

This our 3rd visit and can not fault this site and will be back soon i

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Lovely site with clean toilet blocks and front area and very peaceful
Showers lovely
Nice welcome at reception from the owner
Plenty of space and freedom
Good level pitches
Easy walk into Coleford itself via gate in corner of top field
Lidls and co op only 5 mins drive away
Puzzlewood and Symonds Yat only few miles too
Thank u for a wonderful stay

Disliked: Potential future problem with the lodge /outdoor hot tub and music booming at the entrance with loud guests which we did encounter as mixing camping and holiday lets I would say doesn’t mix and very late one evening and one afternoon was very noisy but of out of the owners hands this as far as there behaviour goes and doesn’t reflect my top rating review but felt needs a mention

From the manager: Thank you so much for your lovely review and kind words! It was lovely to meet you and we're really pleased you enjoyed your stay and appreciated the site and it's convenient location—it's great to hear you made the most of nearby Coleford and attractions like Puzzlewood and Symonds Yat.

We also genuinely appreciate you mentioning the noise concern. The lodge you referred to—The Owl’s Hoot—is part of our site and has been let for almost two years without any previous issues of this kind. We do have a clear noise policy in place, which includes immediate action if we’re notified of any disturbances—day or night. In this instance, you kindly sent us a text message early in the morning, but as our system only allows incoming calls overnight we didn’t receive the alert until morning. If we had received a call, we would have gone up immediately. We did speak to the lodge guests the next morning—they were very apologetic, and we’re pleased to say there were no further issues during the rest of their stay. They were a group of lads are also blocked so they cannot stay again!

We do take our noise policy very seriously and always act on it but following this I will make sure that the need to call rather than text during the night is made clearer in our welcome information going forward.

The lodge is intended to complement the campsite and has proved to be a lovely option for older family members or those who prefer not to camp, allowing everyone to holiday together. We're so glad this didn’t take away from your overall enjoyment, and your feedback is really valued and will hopefully lead to an improvement in our policy. I can only assure you that late night noise is rare from within the campsite and has not occurred from the lodge previously.

We’d love to welcome you back again in the future!

Will definitely stay again

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Well layed out site, good clean facilities, helpful friendly staff, handy location for walking in the Wye valley.

Disliked: Only downside was having to book a full 9x9m pitch for a backpacking tent. A separate area for backpackers, where 4 or 5 people could share a similar area might allow a lower rate to be offered?

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: The site was really tidy and very pretty. Everything was clean, the bathrooms were spotless and very modern and fantastic pizzas on a Friday night. Friendly staff and well spaced pitches all added up to a very pleasant stay. We walked into Coleford a couple of times as it's not far and found some great little shops and a micro pub. We will absolutely come again.

Disliked: Nothing.

Local attractions

Outdoorsy types are well catered to around here, with canoeing and paddleboarding at Symonds Yat Rock, archery and clay pigeon shooting in St Briavels, and pony trekking at Bream. If you're into golfing, then you're also in luck: Coleford has two courses, both less than 10 minutes' drive away. Follow the walking trail through the ancient 14-acre forest of Puzzlewood – the location for the filming of Dr Who, Star Wars, Merlin and Atlantis – to see rock formations and twisted trees, or visit Clearwell Caves to learn about the forest's 4,500-year ore and ochre mining heritage, both within a couple of easy miles of the site. Heaps of historic spots are within easy reach of Greenacres Campsite too, including Tintern Abbey's ruins and the castles of Raglan, Goodrich and Chepstow. The Dean Heritage Centre is a short drive away in the valley of Soudley, and comes highly recommended by Greenacres staff.
