  • Dog-friendly site at the top of Winnats Pass in the Peak District
  • 35 minutes’ drive from Chatsworth House; walk to Mam Tor and caves
  • Farmhouse sells essentials; off-ground firepits and barbecues allowed
Got the travel bug for country walks, caverns and granite tors? Rowter Farm Campsite might be the place for you. This site belongs to a working hill farm in a peaceful plot of land at the top of Winnats Pass in Castleton, so caves and country walks are practically in its backyard (within walking distance, Mam Tor and multiple caverns are open for exploration). Castleton village, five minutes’ drive away, has all the flavour of a classic Peak District village, including Peveril Castle, gift shops and pubs. For more local flavour, the site’s farmhouse sells essentials including eggs and milk. Whenever you want to warm the milk for breakfast or fry a couple of eggs sunny side up, firepits and barbecues are allowed (only if they're raised off-ground, though). Mountain biking and walking are all ways to conquer your new territory and handily, Rowter Farm Campsite is central to some pretty terrains, including Edale (15 minutes’ drive away) and the start of the Pennine Way, with other walks including the Kinder Scout and Jacob’s Ladder as extra spouts. As well as the handsome views up towards Mam Tor on site, the two-acre field has plenty of space for your family’s game of choice. Well-behaved dogs are welcome here and there’s strictly no noise after 10pm for everyone to get in their sleep. Please note that visitors are not allowed on site. Clean and basic sums up the facilities here, which include male and female toilets, one male shower and one female shower (it’s one pound for a three-minute shower), dishwashing facilities, a fridge-freezer and plug sockets for charging phones or drying hair.

What customers say

Great spot for hikers at Mam Tor's foot, with direct trail access. Praised for views, vibe, and staff. Basic but clean loos, hot showers, wash-up. Food vans weekends a bonus. Good value for Peaks access, though facilities are simple and noise can happen.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Location, no frills camping! Good place to get away with limited phone signal.

Disliked For the final extra star, a few more showers and toilet would be good

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked The wall and the trees help to shelter you from the wind, but don’t rely on them 100% 😃
There’s a shop, a shower and a toilet, and they even serve breakfast and dinner in the mornings and evenings – sold from a small van, so you’re welcome

Disliked Not much space in the toilets and showers + queues

Toilets – two cubicles and one urinal in the men’s, and two cubicles in the ladies’

Showers – (literally just one cubicle) one for men and one for women + £1 for a machine that runs for 3 minutes and doesn’t let you adjust the temperature = long queues

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Stunning location, quiet and easy to find. Zero road noise and mostly level.

Disliked Lack of Elsan point. We asked around but apparently there’s no place to empty your toilet cassette.
Poor phone signal and no WiFi options but it is a remote area.
Very basic campsite. No pitch segregation just a field that you choose yourself where to set up. Works well and the site is mostly flat.
On Saturday they had a pizza van which went down well with many campers.

Fire pits are available to hire and they also sell wood.

Quite site with zero road noise and not too many birds shouting their heads off before dawn. ( I didn’t hear any )

As long as you are self sufficient you will like this site, a fair mix of campers ( tents, campers and motorhomes)

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked We had a fantastic stay at this campsite. It’s a working farm, which gave it a lovely, authentic feel, and the family who run it were incredibly welcoming and friendly throughout our visit.

There’s a small on-site shop stocked with essentials, and on Saturday evenings they offer jacket potatoes and freshly made pizzas, which was a great touch after a day outdoors.

The facilities were clean and well maintained, with showers available for £1. While everything was great, the real star of the show for us was their adorable little Jack Russell, who seemed to make it his mission to check in on all the campers. He regularly wandered around the site saying hello and brought a smile to everyone’s face.

A friendly, relaxed campsite with a wonderful atmosphere. We’d happily stay again and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a genuine countryside camping experience.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Stunning location, being on a farm, beautiful walks directly from the farm, lovely grass, relaxed and informal. Toilets and showers basic, but sufficient and clean. There are quainter sites around, but this suited us needing to fit a camper and a caravan.

Disliked It was a warm week-end and the field was busy. The business didn’t matter because we were lucky enough to be surrounded by other respectful campers, which created a fun, almost festival like atmosphere. One anti-social group playing loud music would have spoilt it with pitches being quite close together.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Great site for a quick stay on a very friendly farm site
Choice of jacket potato or pizza on Saturday evening 18:00-20:00 hrs
Brilliant for walking and in the summer you can catch the open top bus tour to Chatsworth and beyond from near the farm drive gate
We will be using and recommending it in the future

Local attractions

Fancy yourself as a lord or lady of the manor? The stately home and estate at Chatsworth House (35 minutes) might be the closest you’ll get. With a 105-acre garden, trout stream and nine rooms with painted ceilings, picnics are quite grand here, as is the scenery for your afternoon stroll or kitchen tour. You’ll certainly feel above everyone else, in the literal sense of the phrase, at Bamford Edge (20 minutes). There’s an uphill hike to this lookout over Ladybower Reservoir… pretty much primed for a photo opportunity, right? Further north, Derwent Reservoir (half an hour) has a fabric of walking and cycling routes plus fishing spots along the water, with bicycle hire available for those of you who don’t have your own pair of wheels. But what about the underground? Well, before you go down under into Castleton’s caverns, you’ll want to conquer Mam Tor (20 minutes' walk) first. It’s in the same area as the Blue John Cavern (25 minutes' walk/five minutes' drive), Speedwell Cavern (35 minutes' walk/five minutes' drive) and Treak Cliff Cavern (55 minutes' walk/10 minutes' drive), where there's everything from an 18th-century lead mine to musical events and rope-making works.
