  • Back to basics rural site on the southern edge of the Peak District
  • A mile from Harborough Rocks or 15 minutes' drive from Matlock Spa
  • A few minutes' walk from the High Peak Trail and clay pigeon shooting
For a quiet and simple site on the southern edge of the Peak District, look to The Laurels. Located a couple of miles from the small village of Brassington and its two pubs, this site has friendly owners who aim to make your stay as comfortable and memorable as possible. Barbecues, campfires and dogs are allowed at this traditional campsite, where families, single-sex groups, students and motorcyclists are all very welcome to pick a plot (but please note that the pitches are not flat in all areas, and you'll be limited to one car per pitch). Regularly cleaned chemical toilets are available for use, and both water and a washing-up area are provided. Both campfires and barbecues are allowed on site, and you can buy small bags of firewood here to save having to lug your own along. You can walk into the hills from base without having to make your way up any steep inclines via the High Peak Trail (a few minutes' walk from site), a flat and accessible long-distance walking and cycling route that runs along an old railway line. For a bit more outdoor sport, you'll also be within easy walking distance of a clay pigeon shooting range. (Please note that sheep graze at The Laurels when guests are not staying. The field will be prepared for your arrival but a few droppings may be left over.)

Local attractions

For a nearby walk, head to Harborough Rocks (a few minutes' walk from site), an impressive limestone cliff with views overlooking Carsington Water. Black Rocks (10 minutes' drive) is another popular walking and climbing area nearby, where as well as far-reaching views over the local landscape you can explore conifer forests at Cromford Moor next door. Watersports and lakeside rambles are on the cards down the road at Carsington Water (10 minutes), where there's also a visitor centre where you can stop for snacks or ice creams. A little to the north, Matlock Bath (15 minutes) is packed with family-friendly attractions, whether you're in the mood for caves, cable cars or an award-winning theme park. For a really special treat, you could also take the thrill seekers in your travel gang to Alton Towers (35 minutes), the UK's largest collection of rollercoasters and other white-knuckle rides. Peak District must-sees that aren't quite so kid-centric (but which the young ones should still enjoy) include the market towns of Ashbourne (20 minutes) and Bakewell (20 minutes) and grand country estates like Chatsworth (30 minutes), which has a farmyard and adventure playground as well as tours of the house.
