  • Well-kept site, family-run for over 30 years
  • Friendly and welcoming with outstanding views
  • Close to Gullivers Kingdom and 45 minutes' drive from Alton Towers
Pigs, ponies and proximity to Peak District towns… farm the family out to Middlehills Farm Campsite. This is a mellow, peaceful and very friendly park that's been run by the Lomas family for over 30 years, set in 40 acres of countryside in the Peak District National Park and a quick drive from kiddie heaven Gullivers Kingdom at Matlock Bath. (Give them an even more heavenly holiday by an additional trip to Alton Towers, about 22 miles from your pitch.) Kids should be enthusiastically entertained by the chance to pet and give treats to the Middlehills pigs and ponies, and with the positively popular play park: owners' Nick and Liz's four-legged lot are often around to make pals with, and the play area is cunningly set near the pitches for grownups to keep a beady eye on proceedings. Facilities at Middlehills Farm include a toilet and shower block (showers are subject to an extra charge, so remember to bring some coins along), two chemical waste points and two washing-up areas with a fridge-freezer each. Schedule pizza night for Friday and Saturday evenings, as this is when the site opens up its pizza van. There is also a small shop selling local produce from the farm shop in Bakewell, fresh milk and bread from the dairy and cheese from Hartington, along with snacks, basic camping equipment and briquettes and starter packs.

Liked Great site. Booked last minute, 30 minutes before reception closed. Staff were friendly. Quiet as we stayed on a Sunday and Monday night. Toilets were clean. Shop on site and managed to get fresh milk in a morning. Lovely farm, Donkeys, sheep, pigs. We didn't require it but nice childrens play area and pizza van on a weekend. Great access for Matlock Bath and Bakewell

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Nice campsite, I managed to catch a quiet Sunday night – only two other groups arriving later in the day. Lovely and peaceful, minimal noise in the area. Facilities were clean, site is definitely family-friendly and seems like potential to get busy, but during term-time on a rainy Sunday night it was good for quiet solo travel. Cars, vans & tents all go in the same field. Easy enough to find and no single-track lanes on the way there.

From the driveway – reception is at the front of the grey stone house on the left, parking spaces in front. The field to the right (in front of the caravans, with the playground on it) seems to be the main one for quieter periods, with the larger field (straight on from the road) being closed Sunday night. Toilets are in the wooden building on the right as you enter the field.

Liked I liked absolutely everything. I’ve been camping for many years. Sometimes up to twenty camping trips per year. This is my favourite. The people on site were friendly. The field was clean and freshly cut. The surrounding fields were occupied with wonderful farmland animals like sheep and horses. The toilets were clean and private. The pigs were lovely as walked to the facilities.
Even and on site shop which was an added bonus. I loved it and cannot wait to go back again. I make camping YouTube videos and I will definitely be recommending this site to my subscribers as well.

Disliked Not one thing about Middlehills did I dislike. I’ve raved to my family and friends about this campsite. Even to other campers at the next two campsites I visited on my trip.

Liked Plentiful facilities that are well maintained and clean, a play area which is great for kids, on site pizza van if you don't fancy cooking, very quiet when we stayed

Disliked The charge for the showers is a bit of a pain if you don't have change and the water pressure isn't great!

Local attractions

After you've taken the kids around Gullivers Kingdom and Alton Towers (that'll be the first three or four days of the holiday sorted), set aside some time for the grand halls and houses in the region, which should be seen firstly because they're fab, and secondly because these days out will be a sedate difference to white-knuckled days out at local theme parks. The knowledgeable team at Middlehills Farm insist that Chatsworth House is a must, and so should you say too, for spectacular gardens even the kids will go gaga for, a decent play area and a farm park for more petting. Bonus: the surrounding 1000-acre park is free to roam around all year round. Nearby Haddon Hall just outside Bakewell is also a sweet treat: film fans and goggleboxers might recognise its setting from the likes of Jane Eyre, Elizabeth and The Princess Bride (the gardens here are pretty splendid too). To tramp around old towns, Matlock, Buxton, Bakewell and Ashbourne are all within easy driving distance of Middlehills Farm – Peak District eats and other souvenirs should be picked up in each. The farm team has plenty more info on the local area in the site reception, but also quickly recommended are walks and watersports around/on nearby Carsington Water, and examining the caves and caverns of the Heights of Abraham from a cable car at High Tor.
