Absolutely loved this site. I had planned to stay for 2 nights but stayed for a third and enjoyed staying on 2 lovely pitches, both with amazing views. The site is peaceful and relaxing. There is no WiFi or phone reception just immersion in nature. I did two long walks, and was blessed with sunshine on both; the scenery is spectacular. The owners are interesting and inspirational. I will definitely be back.

Exactly what we were looking for - eco camping with a hot shower08/29/2024

  • The Pond primitive grass and earth tent campsite (premium, secluded)

  • Liked:

We chose the ‘Pond’ secluded pitch for a 4 night stay. Be sure to check the details before you stay - this is eco camping not Butlins - which is absolutely why we chose it!

Great spacious pitch with an island you can chill on, rack a hammock or pitch on if your tent is not too large and you’re brave enough (we weren’t but spent time on the island and paddling)

The loo with a view was a particular favourite feature.

All the wonders of wild camping with the comfort of a piping hot shower & flushing toilet if you’re feeling fancy.

We were lucky enough to have the site to ourselves for a couple of nights which was tranquil.

Jeremy was a gracious host, showing us to our pitch and all the features of the site, we caught him again the following morning for a chat by the shower but were otherwise left to our own devices to enjoy our stay which we did.

The site allows motorcycles so we will definitely look to return on two wheels.

Good to be able to book specific pitches. Few facilities for the cost.08/27/2024

We booked the pitch Oaktree 1. Nearest other pitch is about 20 yards away and then the next is around 50 yards, so good if you don't want to be surrounded by other tents and be sure of a good pitch if turning up late in the day.
The pitch was large enough for a family tent ~5 x 2.5 m and a 3 x 3 m gazebo but is on a slight slope. It would also have room for a pup tent under the canopy of the oak tree. The fire pit is a fixed old beer keg on a concrete slab that works well. The pitch has its own dedicated parking space on some gravel about 10 yards away from where your tent will be - not possible to park right next to the tent on this pitch.
Nice to have a small stream close to the tent to provide some acoustics in the evening.
Glad not to have any on-site lighting to keep things dark at night.
Glad not to have any phone signal (O2).
Firewood available in bags from the farmhouse but no kindling.

    Disliked:

Eco at this campsite means "we haven't disturbed the environment by building anything" ;-) One toilet and shower in a small outbuilding by the farmhouse, one compostable toilet at the top end of the site, and a few water taps are all the facilities we saw - The site wasn't very busy due to some bad weather but there were still queues for the toilet at peak time in the morning.
Eco also means "take your rubbish home with you" as there are no bins. No problem with this principal but not good to have to remove other peoples dog poo from the pitch when setting up.
Considering the nightly rates are similar to campsites with toilet blocks, bins, etc. the site isn't great value unless you value the certainty of booking a specific pitch
Not exactly related to the campsite, but the owner obviously doesn't want to encourage anyone using the bridleway that passes in front of the farmyard - the line of the path is blocked by several fences. There are a couple of footpath from the campsite entry road that can be used to head down the valley if you want to avoid walking on the main road - one is missing its waymarking where it leaves the campsite, we didn't walk the other one.

Overpriced field with minimal facilities08/27/2024

    The views are stunning

    Disliked:

The facilities are very dated and basic…. One toilet and one shower (which you pay for) for the whole site. This might be acceptable for a cheap stay but it wasn’t cheap! It’s a field, which was becoming water logged. Can’t quite work out why it’s called Eco either.

From the manager...

Please read out Pitchup if unsure of facilities and our eco efforts before booking. Or give us a call/email. Happy to chat.
Sorry can't help the weather this Summer it's been awful!

Not good value for money08/25/2024

  • Meadow Field primitive grass and earth tent campsite
  • Recommend to friends   Visit again

The owners are friendly and you can park next to your tent which is helpful in the rain! The field is nice and open.

    Disliked:

This site is not designed with experience in mind.

The taps are used for water and in the same muddy patch you need to wash up the items from cooking.

There is one toilet for two fields of people, that's around 40+ people to use one space.

There is one shower which you must pay for. This is not acceptable because those with children or those who need help to shower need to spend more so they have the time to clean themselves. That is unfair.

The site refuses to pay for spring water testing but as a paying member of the public this is unacceptable in the UK.

The grass is not mown for tents meaning that it is super wet for camping before it even rains.

Overall for the cost per person, this site abuses the term "eco" for cost cutting and profit.

From the manager...

Camping “the activity of spending a holiday in a tent”.* Dictionary definition! The experience is your to make… pubs, walks, interest in the environment and engaging with those who are custodians of the country side.
Most people who camp bring a washing up bowl and heat water at the tent or in an appropriate place and clean their utensils in their bowl or use one of the two sinks provided.
The site has 3 toilets, two composting toilets and one flushing toilets (see site map, Pitchup or ask) . As explained on Pitchup and specifically on arrival, YOU need to bring your own drinking water. The spring water is not tested and is therefore unfit for drinking. Due to the storage of water, there is a limited supply. This means you are not at liberty to take a shower like you are at home on mains supply. It takes about 48 hours to refill the tanks,(72 if people are still using the supply ). Water economics is a subject least talked about and yet our most pressing issue, hence compostable toilets.
You are on a working farm and haylage has been taken on the fields you are guests on, and this year has been wetter than usual (if you haven’t noticed), and so cutting grass at will, is not possible.
The recycle/reuse ethos we have here is to highlight the waste we produce, but also to encourage our thoughts to water usage on a daily basis. If you had dared to engage to find out the reedbed system being used to process water or the composting of waste or ecological area of orchids or lichens on the trees or any of the other environmental projects on the farm, there may be weight to your comment.
We are sorry for your one wet night here we had no control over the weather.
We have NO WiFi here.
