  • Spectacularly scenic beachfront site on Washington’s Orcas Island
  • A 10-minute drive from Eastsound, and 90 minutes from US mainland
  • Sand and pebble beach, fishing pier, boat hire, hot tub, general store
Jacques Cousteau called the area around Washington state’s San Juan Islands the ‘second best place to dive in the world’. Whether you’re seeking out adventure beneath the waves or simply keen on a scenic getaway by the sea, you’ll be well served by stays at the family-friendly West Beach Resort, 10 minutes’ drive (around three miles) from Orcas Island’s largest town, Eastsound. About an hour and a half by ferry from the mainland, Orcas Island is an exceptionally pretty tree-covered island. The resort is a prime spot to choose as a base for adventures, and the on-site beach is well-placed for spying out wildlife – including whales, porpoises, seals, ospreys and bald eagles – and for swimming (if guests are willing to brave the cold). The beach is also the centre of resort activity during the evenings, with sunset watching and a stop at the nightly bonfire highly recommended. Of course, days must be filled before night falls, and that’s a cinch round here. A pier arcs out over the sea, giving guests a spot to fish for perch, greenling, salmon and lingcod from, and a fish cleaning station should help prep catches for dinner. If fishing doesn’t appeal, take to the water on a rented boat, kayak, canoe or stand-up paddleboard instead, or stick to dry land for ping pong, badminton and volleyball. There’s plenty for the kids – high season activities include face painting, treasure hunts and build-your-own-sundae days – but when something more leisurely is needed, pass time in the central hot tub, strolling the shore, or shopping for souvenirs and snacks in the general store, which is well-stocked with basic groceries, fishing tackle, clothes, candy, ice cream, draught beer, and wine by the glass, as well as fresh hot coffee.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: We loved our stay here and can not wait to go back. Our tent site was enormous. Our 11 & 8 year old sons played on the playground, and at the ping pong tables. We rode our bikes. The boys and I fished from the pier. We rented one of the aluminum boats for a few hours and saw bald eagles, seals and porpoise. The public bathroom and showers were very clean. Wifi everywhere on site....yes even in your tent if you get one of the few camp sites.

Disliked: Nada

Local attractions

Once guests are ready to explore the island, head immediately to Eastsound, the island’s largest town, 10 minutes’ drive from base. As well as restaurants, bakeries and shops, Eastsound has a sprawling skate park, a museum and a library. Well-timed stays also put guests within 10 minutes of the Orcas Island Film Festival, held annually in the town during October. Outdoorsy types keen on stretching legs can make tracks for Moran State Park (15 minutes) to climb Mount Constitution and swim in the five lakes, or turn instead to Turtleback Mountain Preserve (five minutes) or Obstruction Pass State Park (30 minutes) for lengthy hikes. Wind up holidays by cheersing to a fab getaway on tours and tastings at Island Hoppin’ Brewery, Orcas Island Winery and Doe Bay Wine Company, all within about three miles of base.
