  • Stargazer campground 15 minutes’ drive from Durango in Colorado
  • Purgatory Resort 45 minutes’ drive and the Mesa Verde 50 minutes
  • Self-service check-in; elk and deer nearby; stores 15 minutes’ drive
If your idea of heaven is stargazing under Colorado night skies, it’s certainly worth bearing Ribbit Retreat in mind. At just 15 minutes’ drive from the San Juan Mountains town of Durango on the Animas River, this campground is so peaceful it may as well be in another galaxy – and it has the added benefit of only being 45 minutes’ drive from the spectacular Mesa Verde National Park. Designed for self-sufficient guests, it’s also pretty wild in nature, providing minimal facilities in five acres of open fields. There’s plenty of room for easy pull-in access, a self-service check-in system, and motion lighting and cameras for late arrivals. Amenities are basically a portable restroom that’s cleaned weekly, trash and recycling bins, and fire pits plus a pair of Adirondack chairs for every site. You’ll need to pick up food and water at Durango on your way to the site. Once installed, you can chill in hammocks under the trees, watch elk and deer grazing in neighboring fields and glimpse the snow-capped mountains on the horizon. Later in the day, catch stunning sunsets and keep your fingers crossed for clear skies after dark so you can witness the Milky Way dancing across the night skies.

Local attractions

If you’re wanting to stay active, Purgatory Resort (45 minutes’ drive) is as lively in summer as it is in winter months. It has mountain biking trails, a bike park and a fast-paced mountain coaster offering views over the San Juan Mountains. If you’re there from late November, there’s a designated area for novice skiers as well as long intermediate runs lined by fir trees. You can mix things up a bit with whitewater rafting over rapids on the Animas River (20 minutes), or tubing, kayaking and paddleboarding down gentler stretches of the water, where you can also fly fish for rainbow trout. As well as hiking and biking routes, things take a cultural turn in the dramatic Mesa Verde National Park (50 minutes), where you can follow the Petroglyph Point Trail past ancient rock art and catch sight of Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings from the Soda Canyon Overlook Trail. To see inside an indigenous house, prebook ranger-led tours to the landmark Cliff Palace – the largest cliff house in North America.
