  • Huge park with Sierra Nevada views, 45 minutes’ drive from Fresno
  • Riffelhof Vineyards 15 minutes’ drive; Hume Lake 55 minutes
  • Off Highway 180, for direct access to Kings Canyon National Park
Who would pass up the chance to chill out at Dunlap Canyon Retreat? Just three miles off Highway 180, this vast 22-acre site comes with gorgeous mountain scenery that might have you gazing dreamily for hours on end; if the spectacle of nature is not enough to keep you entertained, the place is attached to a further 36 acres where hang-gliders and paragliders like to land. When you’re not getting a good show from a sunrise over the Sierra Nevada mountains or a swooping hang-glider, you can get yourself over to Sequoia National Park, which is about 28 miles (a 55-minute drive) away. Its mountains, canyons and caves aren’t even what makes this place popular; the gigantic sequoia trees are. There are hikes for all levels of ability here, but be sure to equip yourself with a map before you set off. Kings Canyon National Park (half an hour along Highway 180) has yet more impressive trees, including General Grant Tree, the second-largest sequoia in the world. The landscape here is similar to that of the Yosemite Valley, and trails winding past waterfalls, rivers, meadows and canyons will keep you busy. Back at base, the facilities include restrooms with showers and water points. Barbecues and a seasonal pond are just more strings to Dunlap Canyon Retreat’s bow. It’s also handy that it’s a short drive away from a convenience store, a handful of restaurants, and a couple of wineries (all under 15 minutes’ drive or so). For a taste of the city, Fresno is 45 minutes away.

Local attractions

If you have a passion for California wine, there are several vineyards within a short drive of the resort, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Start your vinous pilgrimage at Sierra Peaks Winery (10 minutes’ drive), then continue on to Riffelhof Vineyards (15 minutes) for tastings and a stroll among the growing grapes. The Mural District in downtown Fresno displays colourful and meaningful street art, plus fountains and sculptures. Huge Roeding Park includes the Chaffee Zoo, with hands-on experiences like feedings, and a couple of amusement parks with rides for young visitors; or you can catch a baseball game at Chukchansi Park. With hiking trails, boat launches, and fishing piers, the fir-fringed Hume Lake (55 minutes) is a popular destination in the summer. Swimmers and paddleboarders head to Sandy Cove Day Use Area, on the southeastern tip of the lake, where there are also picnic tables.
