- Creekside site surrounded by woods, 15 minutes' drive from Glenallan
- A mile from Tolsona mud volcano; a half-hour drive from Copper Center
- Theme events and kids' activities on summer weekends
You may be aiming for Alaska in search of peaceful mountain views, river fishing and scenic hikes; your kids, meanwhile (or your kid-like inner self) may simply want to chuckle at a belching mud volcano…
Both of these activities (along with many more…) can be easily sorted at Tolsona Wilderness Campground, in a handy location just off Highway 1 and 15 minutes’ drive from the little town of Glenallan. As the name suggests, there’s proper countryside all around the park – the place itself is in a little clearing in the woods and bordered by the Tolsona Creek (for a bit of fishing warm-up before setting off in search of salmon in the area’s bigger rivers).
Getting out on foot is clearly a fine way to take in some of the surrounds – follow the mile-long trail from the campground to get to that bubbling mud volcano, then set your sights on something lengthier in the vast Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, 15 minutes’ drive away. Bike rides, rafting trips and canoe outings can also be had nearby, as can flightseeing trips for a view from above.
Appreciating the wilderness doesn’t have to mean skipping on facilities though – the campground has lots of the essentials sorted, including a grocery store, a laundry room, a motorhome service point and modern washrooms with free hot showers. Kids’ activities and theme events are held at weekends throughout high season, and there’s also a free wifi connection so you can keep an eye on the world beyond the wilderness (should you wish to, of course).

Local attractions
There’s so much hiking/scenic drive potential around this area it might be hard to pick a place to start… top tips from locals might include dropping in on the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park visitor centre (25 minutes’ drive) for a park trail map, heading up to Lake Louise (45 minutes) or parking at Glacier View (an hour) for, well, a glacier view… or a hike towards Matanuska glacier if you like.
The mountains around here are pretty stunning, but so too are the waterways… Copper Center (35 minutes) is the place to go for rafting trips or fishing charters to take you out in search of the big critters that lurk in the Gulkana, Klutina and Copper Rivers (including some mighty salmon). If you want a wide-ranging view to follow up on the details at ground level, take a sightseeing flight from McCarthy Airport (20 minutes).
Folk were here way before you, of course – learn a bit about the native culture at the George Ashby Memorial Museum (35 minutes) or stop by some of the local villages including Kulti-Kaah and Tazlina (both within half an hour).
