- Well-equipped resort on the western shore of Florida’s Lake Okeechobee
- Brighton Reservation 15 minutes’ drive; Gatorama Inc. 25 minutes
- Catch-and-release freshwater fishing; heated pool and dog park
On the western shore of Lake Okeechobee, North Lake Estates RV Resort is a dreamy place for those seeking fishing, boating and hiking in Moore Haven, Florida. The place comes with a full set of attractive features: there’s a catch-and-release lake for freshwater fishing, a heated outdoor swimming pool, and a dog park for canine family members to let off steam too.
Not only that: North Lake Estates is centrally located for accessing Lake Okeechobee’s east and west beaches, and if you’d like to get right out on the water, there are also several boat ramps. Relaxing is certainly easy too, given that there are nature trails, landscaped grounds, and a lakeside pavilion with barbecue, picnic, and sundeck areas.
Take refuge in the library, sewing room, crafts area, woodworking shop, or fitness room. If you’re after more competitive activities, you can head to the pickleball, horseshoes, and bocce ball courts; there are also billiards tables, darts boards, card tables, and a games room, plus a lively activity calendar with events such as dances.
Across the landscaped grounds, handy facilities include showers and a laundromat, a communal area with a fully equipped kitchen, a mail center and restrooms.
When you’re ready to tear yourself away from the resort’s many facilities and scenic lakefront, it’s five minutes’ drive to Lakeport, home of the Sour Orange Festival (which takes place in January); 15 minutes to the Seminole Casino Brighton; and 25 minutes to hiking areas such as Fisheating Creek.

Local attractions
Established in the 1930s for the Seminole tribe, the Brighton Reservation (15 minutes’ drive) is anchored by the Seminole Casino Brighton, with slot machines and table games where you can gamble 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. There are also dining options and live music concerts.
At Gatorama Inc. (25 minutes), the motto is the ominous ‘Fast hands or no hands’. Wild encounters here go beyond alligators and crocodiles to include pythons and tortoises; there’s also a small pool where the kids can get their hands on a baby gator. The twice-daily feeding shows are pretty thrilling, too.
Fisheating Creek Wildlife Management Area (25 minutes) is the place for wildlife watching – from wading birds and raptors, to river otters and alligators. Canoe or paddleboard along the cypress-lined creek, hike the shaded trails, or get a permit to fish for catfish and tilapia.
