  • Simple park in the Cahaba River Valley, a 10-minute drive from Marion
  • Paul M. Grist State Park 35 minutes’ drive; Selma 40 minutes
  • Access to a farmhouse with kitchen and other amenities; dogs welcome
There are no prizes for guessing where Cahaba River Ranch is (in western Alabama’s Cahaba River Valley). However, this peaceful, family-friendly campground has such a remote vibe, surrounded as it is by dense forest, that you might be surprised to hear that the city of Marion, with its shops, restaurants and bars, is only a 10-minute drive away. Cahaba River Ranch sits on a 150-acre farm, and while grass campsites are simple (there’s no electric hook-up, for example), guests have access to the farmhouse and its amenities. These include a well-equipped kitchen (with a fridge freezer, electric hobs, microwave and coffee maker, plus washing-up sink); bathrooms with shower and bathtub; a laundromat with dryer; and electrical outlets. There’s also a room with cable TV, for when you’re ready to swap woodland walks and fishing expeditions for a little zapping action… But really, chances are you’ll want to make the most of the splendid countryside (and riverscapes) on your doorstep. Take your dog to Perry Lakes Park (10 minutes’ drive), a large nature reserve with hiking trails, fishing lakes and birding towers from where you might spot kingfishers and cuckoos. If you’re into birding, you might want to check out Paul M. Grist State Park (35 minutes), which is home to raptors and warblers, as well as deer and wild turkey. In the middle of this nature reserve, Valley Creek Lake is a top spot for a swim or a paddleboard excursion.

Local attractions

You might feel a little emotional crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma (40 minutes’ drive) as you think of the Civil Rights protesters – including Martin Luther King Jr – who marched on it in 1965. Afterwards, visit the National Voting Rights Museum and Institute, or take a stroll through the Old Town Historic District. At the confluence of the Cahaba and Alabama rivers is Old Cahawba Archaeological Park (45 minutes). For five years in the 1820s, Cahawba was the state’s first capital, but it was abandoned following the Civil War, floods and other unfortunate events, becoming the ghost town that is here today. In Tuscaloosa (an hour), a paved path skirts the Black Warrior River, taking in the Oliver Dam Observation & Fishing Pier (with a playground), historical markers, and (on Saturdays) the popular Tuscaloosa River Market, with stalls selling produce, baked goods, and artisanal crafts.
