- Exclusive-use primitive camping in upstate New York woodland
- Long Pond State Forest five minutes’ drive; Greek Peak half an hour
- Fishing in the creek edging the property; stores five minutes’ drive
Looking to escape your fellow man for the getaway experience of a lifetime? Make your way to Live The Outdoors, a 10-acre woodland property on the outskirts of Smithville Flats, New York State, that you’ll have all to yourself. This is primitive camping as it should be, with sites tucked under mature trees or at the end of the drive-in trail.
This wide dirt path into the property is accessible with any four-wheel drive, motorbike, cycle or quad bike. Once in there, you have the option for fishing in Strong Brook bordering the private woodland, and as it’s dog-friendly, you can exercise your canine chums safe in the knowledge that they’re not going to annoy anyone – because there’s no-one else around.
As the place is totally off grid, you’ll need to bring everything in with you, from drinking water to torches (and spare batteries) and food (you can grill stuff on the fire ring). The small towns of Greene (15 minutes’ drive) and Smithville Flats (five minutes) have a number of diners and restaurants as well as stores where you can stock up on basics.

Local attractions
If you’re looking for more outdoor activity, Long Pond State Forest (five minutes’ drive) is the spot for kayaking on the lake, hiking around the conifer woodland and fishing for perch and bass from the boat launches. Keep a look out for herons and ospreys on your adventures.
In winter, you can go ice-fishing there too, and there are multiple snow-mobile trails in several of the local state parks. You can ski at Greek Peak (half an hour), where there are tree-lined runs for all abilities.
Locally, you can also go horseback riding (five minutes) or safe swimming in Whitney Point Lake (half an hour, no motor boats allowed). If the weather should turn nasty on you, keep your activity levels up with a visit to the rock-climbing gym at Lindseth Climbing Center (55 minutes).
