- Fully serviced campground in the Black Hills National Park
- A 10-minute drive from Custer; half an hour from Mount Rushmore
- Playground, outdoor kitchen, camping store and outdoor social area
Take a break in the Black Hills National Park with a stay at Broken Arrow Campground, a spacious South Dakota park surrounded by gorgeous woodlands and with views across to nearby mountain peaks.
This location, just under 10 minutes’ drive from Custer, is a great one for getting out to explore the local area, whether you’re planning hikes, trail rides or motorbike adventures in nearby state parks or visits to attractions like Jewel Cave and the iconic Mount Rushmore. Having the town such a short drive away is a handy thing too, as you’ll be able to enjoy all the benefits of a large rural site but also have useful things like shops and restaurants close by.
There are plenty of handy things waiting for you when you return to the site too – this is a fully serviced campground that’s got all the essentials sorted, including a guest laundry room, a camping store, wifi access and an outdoor kitchen with washing-up area. Bathrooms are well equipped too, with his and hers sections plus an accessible area for less mobile guests. It’s a large place, so you can also borrow golf carts and wheelbarrows to transport yourself and your stuff around if you like.
As well as those amenities, there’s plenty of scope for fun in your downtime – the park has a playground and horseshoes pit, plus an extensive DVD library for those times when you’d like to put your feet up and watch a movie. Elsewhere around the park are an outdoor pavilion for socialising, and you can buy firewood for an evening by the campfire.

Local attractions
Here to explore the stunning surroundings? Get your bike or boots ready for trails in Custer State Park (10 minutes’ drive) and the wildlife-packed Wind Cave National Park (15 minutes), or saddle up for trail riding from a horse ranch 15 minutes’ drive away. If you’d like to see what lies underneath the ground, take a trip to the impressive Jewel Cave (20 minutes), where you can take tours of the third-longest cave in the world.
Take in a bit of local history while you’re here with an outing to Custer’s 1881 Courthouse Museum (10 minutes) and Four Mile Old West Town Museum (15 minutes) – or go way, way further back by exploring the dinosaur remains at The Mammoth Site (35 minutes). Scenery and nostalgia can be mixed together with a steam locomotive ride on the 1880 Train (25 minutes).
Of course, if you’re going to see only one attraction around here, it should probably be the Mount Rushmore National Monument – it will take you a little over half an hour to drive to the world-famous mountainside sculpture.
