- Well-maintained Michigan campground 10 minutes' drive from Wellston
- Surrounded by the Manistee National Forest for hikes and fishing
- Canoe, kayak and raft hire, plus shuttle to the Pine River
Camping and canoeing go hand in hand for great outdoor adventures – and Sportsman’s Port Canoe Camp has been set up to make the most of that excellent combination. This family-owned Michigan campground is surrounded by the 22,000-acre Manistee National Forest and about a mile and a half from the banks of the Pine River.
This is something of a one-stop shop for those looking to get out on the river – you can rent canoes, kayaks and rafts here, pick up advice on the best stretches of river to go for and even hitch a ride on the shuttle bus (selected days only). A word of warning though: the Pine River is known for its fast flow and therefore it’s recommended for experienced paddlers only. If it sounds a bit wild for you, perhaps bring your fishing rod along and try to hook out some of the resident trout.
There’s been a campground on this spot for more than 40 years, and over time the owners have managed to install plenty of facilities around the spacious 40-acre property. That includes essentials like a bath house (with four showers each for men and women), a washing-up area, picnic benches and three charcoal grills as well as fun things such as a paved basketball pad and a small playground area with a sand volleyball court. The closest grocery store is less than a mile away, and there are more amenities in Wellston (10 minutes’ drive).

Local attractions
The white water adventures are fantastic around here, but they’re far from the only way to experience the area’s gorgeous scenery and fresh air. You might instead like to fish for salmon in the Manistee River or for trout in the Pine River, go hiking on the North Country Trail (10 minutes’ drive to a good starting point) or play golf at Caberfae Peaks (10 minutes).
There are plenty more hikes and off-road trails to make your way along in the Manistee National Forest, but if you don’t mind travelling a little further you can find a real change of scenery on the shores of Lake Michigan around Manistee (half an hour) or scramble through the sand at Sleeping Bear Dunes (an hour).
If you’ve got kids to entertain, a day out at Adventure Island amusement park (15 minutes) should do the trick; if not, perhaps a tour of the farm and factory at Iron Fish Distillery (half an hour) would be more your style? It’s also worth checking listings to see if you can time a visit to coincide with events like the Mesick Mushroom Festival or Hoxeyville Music Festival (and if not there’s often live music at Coyote Crossing, five minutes away).
