  • Tree tents at an old hydroelectric station on the Mao River, Galicia
  • Kayaking 20 minutes’ walk; Pradomao river beach half an hour’s drive
  • On-site cantina; access to Ribeira Sacra walking and cycling routes
And now for something completely different – camping in tree tents. And what’s more, tree tents set up among woodland at A Fábrica da Luz near Parada de Sil in a fabulously untamed part of Galicia. Bordering the Mao River – a tributary of the Sil – and its forested canyon, the site is surrounded by chestnut, cork oaks and hazel trees as well as vineyards clinging to the steep slopes of the valley. The campsite itself is centred around a former hydroelectric station built between 1914 and 1916. Once an industrial landmark, the building now doubles as an exhibition space and conference room. And not forgetting a cantina, feeding all comers from seasonal menus showcasing regional specialties like DOC wines, honey, cheeses, sausages, tapas... the list goes on. Eat inside or alfresco under the trees. But back to those tree tents. Secured a few feet off the ground, they’ll soon have you – and up to two of your pals – hanging around among the greenery in total peace and solitude. Just bring your sleeping bag and climb aboard for the ultimate in eco-friendly camping experiences – and fully protected from any bumpy ground or invading creepy crawlies.

Local attractions

A Fábrica da Luz acts as a hub for hiking routes in the Ribeira Sacra region, and prospective explorers can hire mountain bikes on site. Signposted routes run to the Concellos of Nogueira de Ramuin (two hours by bike) and Parada de Sil (half an hour), passing through forest and over tumbling rivers to remote mountain villages. Hikers can get in on the act too, with a couple of circular routes along the Pasarela do Río Mao boardwalk (20 minutes’ walk) through the Mao River Canyon, or heading through the local vineyards. Roaming further afield, head up to the Miradoiro do Monte do Outeiro (an hour and a half) for views over the undulating Ribeira Sacra foothills. You could also pick up your fishing rod and go casting for trout (in season) on the Sil River (20 minutes), or up the activity levels and paddle a kayak downstream, passing terraced vineyards on steep forested canyon-sides. Kids with you? Make for the sandy river beach at Pradomao (half an hour’s drive) for a dip in clear blue water.
