What a gorgeous Galicia setting this is – Teiraboa Basecamp is in a rural spot surrounded by hiking trails, bike routes and natural features, but it’s also less than two kilometres from the village of Arzúa for easy access to things like shops and restaurants to provide energy for your adventures. The major attraction around here is the Camino de Santiago, which passes just by the site and makes this a handy stopover point for those tackling the entire route. If you’re not planning quite such enormous challenges, there are plenty more trails to walk along nearby, including waymarked trails and shorter strolls to local waterfalls or historic sights. Bike trails are equally well supplied if you’d rather travel on two wheels, and it’s possible to hire bikes on site. Not run out of energy yet? The site has a swimming pool, a playground and a sports field for games of football and basketball. Handily, it’s also got communal barbecues and a restaurant where more exhausted guests can relax with snacks or full meals (including a daily set menu of local dishes). All other essentials are taken care of on site too: guests have access to wifi, a launderette, a washing-up area and bathroom blocks with toilets and showers. Dogs are welcome, and there’s a dog park where they can have a good run about.

This site has spacious, shaded pitches & is great for exploring Galicia/Santiago. Friendly staff, clean facilities & a nice pool are highlights. Watch for road noise & some sanitary block upkeep issues. Supermarket & bar are good, but breakfast hours can be tight.

Liked The pitch itself. Good size, with a hardstanding and decent shade. The staff were all friendly.

Disliked The shower and toilet blocks aren't great. Soap dispensers empty all week, toilet seats broken or loose, lights rarely worked and when they did, they don't stay on long enough! Quite a noisy site at night. With traffic and what sounds like dog kennels nearby?

Local attractions

Ask on site for details of hiking routes in the local area – there are several marked trails to follow, taking in river views, farmland and woodlands. You can also take shorter strolls around places like the Salto das Pombas (20 minutes’ drive) and Fervenza das Hortas waterfalls (25 minutes) waterfalls or head to Portodemouros Reservoir (20 minutes) for lakeside walks and watersports including kayaking. If you’re not doing the complete Camino walk, it’s worth taking a day trip to Santiago de Compostela (half an hour) anyway – the city has a lot to see, including the huge cathedral, the Museum of the Galician People and the Galician Contemporary Art Centre, along with lots of places to sample local cuisine. For more days out, try a trip to Lugo (50 minutes) to explore its Roman sites and take a boat trip on the river or visit A Coruña (an hour) for fine coastal views, including those from the huge spherical lift that runs up San Pedro Hill. There’s a great aquarium and a science museum here too.
