With its long, sandy beaches, clear waters and outdoorsy lifestyle, the Costa Blanca is a top spot for an active (or relaxing…) Mediterranean holiday. And when you decide to visit, you might want to book a spot at Camping Azul, a family-friendly site a 10-minute drive from the town of Oliva, in the Valencian Community. One of the advantages of staying here is having direct access to Rabdells Beach. Just take the decked walkway leading beyond the dune at the eastern end of the site, which is lined with oleander shrubs. You’ll be treated to a splendid sight of expansive golden sands lapped by the shallow waters of the Balearic Sea. Early risers head to the shore to welcome the sun, and watersports enthusiasts can often be seen paddleboarding (or kite- or windsurfing, when the wind’s stronger) here. For other water-based activities, head to the harbour at Gandia (half an hour’s drive), where you can join a fishing charter or a cruise. If you prefer your feet firmly on the ground, there are several golf courses within a 25-minute drive. Alternatively, hire a bike on site and explore on two wheels, whether along the coastline or heading inland, to the Pego-Oliva Marsh (21 minutes’ bike ride), which is home to herons and marsh harriers. On the edge of this nature area is the Font Salada natural pool, with warm water all year round. In addition to a playground and a snack bar, the site has a toilet/shower block, a launderette and recycling facilities.

Local attractions

If a rainy day should stop beach play, head to the Cova de les Calaveres (20 minutes’ drive), which translates as ‘the cave of the skulls’, on account of the remains that were found here. A decked walkway snakes through atmospherically lit halls with recreated scenes from when the cave was home to prehistoric tribes. The port city of Dénia (half an hour) is overlooked by a castle with imposing stone walls and Moorish elements. From there, take a stroll along the Via Verda de Dénia (it leads all the way to Gandia), or drive the 10 minutes to the Jardín de l’Albarda, with formal gardens, ponds and fountains. Birdwatchers make a beeline for the Albufera Natural Park (an hour), where the freshwater lake, dunes and ponds provide shelter for flamingos and herons. All around the lake are the rice fields supplying the region with the key ingredient for its famed paella.
