Need a place to shelter from the Spanish sun? The mature mulberry trees at Camping Los Naranjos cast plenty of shade over the pitches, making this an excellent place for those seeking a cool spot for a siesta or a night of slumbers. Saunter out from your little shaded patch and it’s a mere five-minute wander to the beach, a lengthy sandy number with plenty of lovely places nearby for a swim, a sunbathe and a stroll. Also around the locale to tempt you from beach-based antics are a waterpark, a nature reserve, some Roman ruins and an excellent zoo. Lazy days can also easily be spent at the site’s pool, with much to keep the more active sorts happily amused while the more sedate ones snooze. A whole heap of activities is laid on in summer months, including sports tournaments, dance classes, aqua gym sessions and kids’ movies and games. Pétanque, table tennis and a playground also provide further amusement. Feed up for your days of activity or glorious sloth at the site’s restaurant/bar (with play area and games to while away those hungry minutes), or cook up your own feast – pick up fresh bread and other bits at the mini market and head to the barbecue area for a cookout.

Local attractions

Like to get a bit busy on your beach days? Head up to Borriana, half an hour’s drive away, to master the techniques of sea kayaking, paddleboarding or sailing. Novices can learn to scuba dive here too, while qualified divers can take trips to the Columbretes Islands to plunge into the gorgeously clear waters. Further aquatic antics can be had at the Aquarama waterpark, half an hour away. For something a little gentler, take a walk around the L'Estany de Nules nature reserve, or the Roman villa at Benicató – both are around 20 minutes away by car. For a slice of city life, head to Valencia, 45 minutes away, to visit the City of Arts and Sciences, eat your way round the fab food market and get a culture fix at the cathedral and fine arts museum. The city’s Bioparc zoo, where the animals are kept in as natural a habitat as possible, is well worth a visit too.
