El Canto La Gallina is about 600 metres from the village of Valdemaqueda, part of a regionally protected area for birds and birdwatching, and in a pine grove with topping mountain views. Barbecue facilities are to hand if you want to cook in such splendid surrounds, but if lifting a finger is the last thing you want to do on hol, a café, bar and restaurant are also around to potter along to.
Camping El Canto La Gallina also has an outdoor pool, a football pitch, a basketball court, a playground, miniature golf, an archery range and a supermarket. And – always a bonus if you're on holiday with small bumpy sorts – a doctor's practice is around on site too.

Also 20 kilometres away is San Lorenzo del Escorial, the mountain town on the southern slopes of Mount Abantos. Its Monastery of El Escorial and surrounds are a UNESCO World Heritage Site; more modernly, the town's Valley of the Fallen is a mighty funeral monument built in the 1940s and 1950s to commemorate the dead of the Spanish Civil War. (look for the huge cross).
If you're up for making a full day of it, use the site as a base from which to get to Madrid and Ávila, both 50 kilometres away, Segovia 80 kilometres away, and Toledo, within about 100 kilometres.
