If you find the scorching Spanish sun just a bit too blazing while on hol at Girona's Camping Esponellá, how in luck are you. Because it's only a drive of 15 minutes or so from this peaceful place to the famed waters of the Lake of Banyoles, the biggest natural lake in Catalonia. Such is the spectacular setting of this watery body that the 1992 Barcelona Olympics had its sailing events here, and the World Rowing Championships were held on the lake in 2004. You can of course mess about in boats on the waters by your very own self, by hiring a rowing vessel, taking a trip where someone else takes the tiller, or guiding yourself along in a canoe or kayak. (While keeping a watchful eye out for the Banyoles monster in the watery depths below, but of course…) On site, three pools – one outdoor and two indoor – are to hand for more water-based shenanigans, and a small river is alongside the grounds for fishing and paddling. Out of the water, there's miniature golf if you're feeling (slightly) active under the splendid Spanish sun, and volleyball, tennis or football to have a go at for the truly energetic. Inflatable games and toys are set up at the playground in summer. Sort a meal or takeaway at the site's Mediterranean restaurant or use the supermarket for a bit of what you fancy: either of these should be followed by a lingering drink at the Camping Esponellá bar, under the setting Spanish sun.

Great for families! Guests love the peaceful vibe, clean grounds, and awesome amenities like a heated pool & river. Friendly staff and good value food. Most pitches are spacious, but a few found them small or lacking shade. Some older facilities and distant bins were noted.

Disliked Muy poco sitio de barbacoa, las basuras están muy lejos, no hay donde tirar la caca de perro y los baños están muy lejos de los sitios de acampada libre
El lago está demasiado sucio
Hay que pagar por todooo, hasta por jugar en el mini golf

Liked Amazing toilet and shower block. Lights automatically came on, toilet roll provided and very clean.

Disliked Pitches were quite small and difficult to get shady spots. Only the heated pools were open and it was very hot so we didn’t use them.

Liked Parcela arbolada, molt a prop de lavabos i lloc per rentar vaixella. Els lavabos molt nets. Vam llogar una nevera pels dies que vam estar i també kajak per anar pel Rio. Molt bonic. Les piscines, l'aigua bastant freda. I els veïns, malgrat les excepcions de tot arreu, bastant educats i respectuosos.
El personal del camping, molt bé.

Route directions

On the A7 take exit 3, signposted Figueres, and continue on the N260 following directions for Figueres-Besalu. After Navata, near the service station, turn left in the direction of Banyoles. At the crossroad after the bridge over Fluvia, turn right and follow the signposts for the campsite.

Local attractions

The spectacular waters of the Lake of Banyoles are lauded as the best place for watersports in all of Catalonia. Sailing, rowing, boat trips, canoeing and kayaking are all available at the lake; start off at the Club Natació  Banyoles or Banyoles Watersports Centre to see what's on offer all around. If you're not much for watersporting, you can cycle, hike, mountain bike or amble around the lake's perimeter, or lurk in its shoreside shrubbery for a birdwatching or nature spotting afternoon. Bike and Segways are available to hire, although possibly not the brightest idea if you're on a hidden birdwatching trip. Also much recommended are the medieval town of Besalú, 15 minutes' drive away, the Dalí Museum in Figueras, within 25, and the 40-minute drive to the La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park. Girona is about 35 minutes away and Barcelona an hour and a half.
