If you’re keen to mug up on some Cantabrian culture, get yourselves off to Comillas (10 minutes’ drive), a rural town set among lush hills and with an Insta-worthy collection of art nouveau buildings. Look out for the pink-stone Capilla Panteón de los Marqueses de Comillas and the landmark El Capricho Villa, festooned with coloured mosaics and designed by Antoni Gaudí, the architect of Barcelona fame. To taste the flavours of northern Spanish cuisine, head to the hallowed gourmet city of Santander (45 minutes). Here you can gorge on Basque-style pintxos skewers in cosy tiled tapas bars, celebrate special occasions in award-winning restaurants, or taste salt cod and Txakoli Basque wine at traditional bodegas decorated with wine barrels and wooden beams. If you’d prefer to explore the region on foot, take a stroll along the sandy beaches, dunes and river estuaries of Oyambre Natural Park straight from your pitch – and of course, your board awaits for some high-octane surfing action just off Playa de Oyambre.
