There's a comely little village near the mountain site of Camping El Cantonet, set in the Andalucian massif of the Sierra Mágina and in the province of Jaén. It's Albánchez de Mágina, home of an ancient Moorish fortress along with handsome white Andalucian buildings and traditional festivals and carnivals in the summer months – and then there are the Iberian and Roman remains, or just loafing around the scenic town plaza… Away from town, El Cantonet is a quiet site, surrounded by the mountains and with several hiking, cycling and horse riding routes nearby. It has two pools, one for adults and one for kids, as well as a playground, a games/common room with TV, and a café and bar serving local cuisine and drinks. Amenities include a laundry area, sinks, and two loo and shower blocks (ladies' and gents'), both with disabled access and hot running water.

Liked We stayed for 3 nights so we could visit the region and go hiking. The location is spectacular.
Rural and family run.

Disliked Our 1st impressions were that it was a bit scruffy and rundown but we were here in February, just after the storms.

Liked What a lovely little site this is. The owner was very helpful and the facilities are great. We where able to pick our own pitch which was a good size for our 8m Motorhome. Toilets are very clean but a bit dated. Lovely views of the surrounding hills and countryside.

Liked A wonderful picturesque location. Mountains and olive groves around! Such a quiet and peaceful site. Very helpful family staff who made you feel welcome, and offered support. The opportunity to enjoy wonderful, homemade and cheap pizzas €6 were most welcome. The views and walks through the olive groves were memorable!

Disliked Thought the facilities were fine, the showers were difficult to control, with very hot water difficult to control. However, the facilities were clean and functional. All credit to the family who ran this wonderful picturesque site.

Liked The staff were amazing. Could not do enough for us. Even brought a pizza to our door that we were supposed to collect. Had a problem with the internet quite late at night and they resolved it via a message immediately, but followed it up with a visit to us.

Disliked There was no bar or restaurant as such, even though it was stated on the website. It was a vending machine selling cold and soft drinks and the restaurant was really reception cooking pizzas and fresh bread to order.

Liked A charming and characterful traditional campsite, few and far between these days.
Lovely helpful hosts who made our brief two night stay pleasurable and easy.
Fairly priced, clean, all you need to hand and in no way pretentious.
Of our future travels take us this way we would definitely be back.

Local attractions

Most of the Sierra Mágina mountain range is in the Sierra Mágina Natural Park near Camping El Cantonet, a place of varied terrain including steep slopes for mountain biking and hiking, caving opps among the limestone and dolomite rocks, and Jaén's highest peak Pico Pandera at 1,722 metres. If you're spending some time in the national park (recommended), it's a fine plan to see how many of its towns and villages you can get to – Torres, Jimena, Bélmez de la Moraleda, Jodar and the heritage gardens of Pegalajar are all here – and try out the local dishes of the tapas bars and taverns while you're there (if you want a local foodie souvenir, pick up a few bottles of Sierra Mágina olive oil). The city of Jaén is 45km away: lashings of more golden olive oil can be found here (Jaén is nicknamed the olive oil capital of the world), and there are several festivals held in the city alongside its cafés, museums, castle and cathedral.
