General

  • Peaceful mountain site set on a plateau overlooking the Sierra Nevada
  • Next to the Canales Reservoir and a kilometre from Güéjar Sierra
  • Pool and a solarium with views over the lake and the mountains

There's loads to do on and around spectacularly set Camping Las Lomas in Andalucia… but you may just decide to plonk yourself down and take in these splendid mountain views instead.

This lovely landscape a kilometre from the Granada town of Güéjar Sierra – popular with tourists for decades – has loads to gaze upon in its surroundings – and loads to do around and about too. It's 1,100 metres above sea level on a plateau overlooking the Sierra Nevada mountain range, on the edge of the Sierra Nevada National Park, and close to outdoor activities at the neighbouring Canales Reservoir.

Get as active or as idle as you like from this peaceful place: for the former, the park organises guided hiking tours around the surrounding peaks in summer; canoeing and fishing are top picks in the reservoir and river, and bike paths meander around the water.

For the latter, not much could be more mighty in the serene stakes than a long, long lie on a lounger in the solarium, cold drink to hand, and views of the lake and the Sierra Nevada to your front. A pretty site pool is also to hand, and there are plenty of non-water facilities too, including a miniature golf course, a small basketball court, ping pong tables and a playground. Kids' activities are arranged in summer.

Foodwise, take your pick from picnics pitchside, to tuck into groceries and freshly baked bread from the site supermarket or the shops in town. Or (recommended), let someone else do the food prep and have meals at the Las Lomas restaurant, which serves cuisine typical of the area such as the famed cold soup dish gazpacho andaluz (also recommended).

And then? The heated amenity block houses a dry sauna that accommodates two adults.

This place is wonderful. The view of the lake and the snowy mountains from our campervan door was just beautiful. The air was fresh and clean. The people were lovely and friendly and really helpful. The bus trip into Granada with two small children was easy and cost next to nothing €1.80 each and the 3 year old was free. Our two children loved the playground and every one after got compared to it. None matched it! We were close to the Las Cahorros walk which we actually managed to complete with two smallies. The onsite restaurant did us a takeaway steak dinner after the kids went to bed and we were in heaven. The showers are better than the ones in my house and roasting hot - very welcome after a 8Km hike with a child on my shoulders for 3km! Can't praise this place highly enough. The shop surprised me too - I was able to get a carton of soya milk for my little man who has a milk allergy and cheaper than ASDA at home! Very impressed. My only regret was that I didn't make it into the pool which looked beautiful.

There are nuts everywhere. Falling out of the trees in the playground, at the bus stop, on every menu and in every baked good. Not an issue for most but we have a child with a nut allergy and it scared the bejeesus out of me for most of the stay. We had no problems though.

Good sized pitches. Personal olive and oak trees for shade. On-site swimming pool. Wonderful views of the surrounding mountains and lake. Good showers and washing facilities. On-site shop for everyday essentials. Bus to Granada stops outside site. Guejar Sierra a 15 minute walk away. Great country for walking. Local people we met were all friendly despite our poor grasp of Spanish.

Views are incredible. Pitches are generally big but take your time to choose one, we didn't and then our second car didn't fit. Pitches are private and surrounded by hedges. There is a kids club with staff to entertain the younger ones. Granada is around 15 mins away.

    Disliked:

Had dinner in the restaurant but they don't tell you the bread is extra and had to send some meat back twice because it was raw in the middle when we asked for medium rare.

Everything. The surroundings are absolutely stunning. Staff on the reception were so helpful and friendly. The small shop had everything you should need. Although we didn’t use the restaurant it looked very popular and there were good choices on the menu. Shower/toilet facilities clean and plenty of running hot water. Washing and tumble dryer on site. There were staff who were constantly looking after the pitches, hedges, flowers, trees and grass. Pitches extremely well looked after. We didn’t use the pool but it looked very nice. A walk into the village is a must. We caught the bus back to the site from the village square. The bus into Granada stops literally right outside the camp and drops back at the camp at the same place. We loved it so much we stayed an extra night.

Local attractions

After a day or two on site taking in the views, the pool and the gazpacho, take a scenic stroll to Güejar Sierra, about a kilometre away. It's been a popular tourist destination since the 1920s, for its spectacular setting, its houses made from the former tramway's abandoned sleeper cars, and its starting point for the famed hiking path of the Vereda de la Estrella. Buses run from the village to Granada several times daily.

The land surrounding the Canales Reservoir is networked by cycle paths and walking routes; one of the area's most popular trails follows an old tramway along the reservoir and takes the intrepid through old tramway tunnels and over bridges.

Other must-sees within easy reach are the world-famed palace and fortress complex of Alhambra, Granada Cathedral and the Royal Chapel of Granada with its tombs of Catholic monarchs, all within easy reach.
