You might struggle to find a better Andalusian setting than the one at TAIGA Puerto Santa María… with direct access to the sandy sweep of Playa de la Puntilla and 15 minutes’ stroll taking you into El Puerto de Santa María, the site is also in pole position for visiting Cádiz (25 minutes’ drive) and Jerez de la Frontera (half an hour). Life at the site is also pretty easy, centring on the outdoor swimming pool and its sun-trap deck by day. There’s a large adventure play park for younger guests, and lots of day-time activities as well as evening entertainment in the high season. All is taken care of catering-wise too; the restaurant/bar produces a good line in grilled meats, rice dishes and cocktails, and if you prefer to go down the self-catering route, there’s a really well-stocked supermarket – selling everything from fresh bread to sleeping bags – covering all shopping needs right on site too.

Liked I loved this site so much we stayed an extra night. We felt so welcome, not only on the site but also in the town.
We were unlucky with the weather but we soon found nice cafes and unusual interesting shops.

Disliked The was nothing at all to dislike.

Liked Good location for boat ferry to Cadiz (20 minute walk). Reception staff are very friendly and helpful. Toilets and showers kept really clean.

Disliked Booked months in advance on pitch-up and paid twice the price of people who just turned up on the day. Plenty of pitches on the site but they seem to put you all in the same area next to each other.

Local attractions

Fabulous, historic Cádiz (25 minutes’ drive) might be your first port of call; try to visit the gleaming-white cathedral and the Roman amphitheatre or have a walk around the ramparts of the 16th-century Castillo de Santa Catalina. Take in the lively atmosphere and fragrant smells of the Mercado Central de Abastos, and wind up a sightseeing day over tapas dishes in a Barrio del Pópulo bar. Jerez de la Frontera (half an hour) is another magical place full of heritage; it has an ornate cathedral and the sturdy Alcázar fortress is surrounded by verdant Islamic-style gardens. If you’d rather dodge any more culture, head for one of the numerous sherry bodegas for a tasting session or book tickets to see Spanish horses performing dressage drills at the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art. If the kids would just rather doss around on the sand, then Playa de la Puntilla is the place to be. Barely a couple of minutes’ walk from your accommodation, it has facilities for dinghy sailing, windsurfing and canoeing. There’s also a riding school (10 minutes’ drive) for lessons and countryside treks, and a seafront golf course 20 minutes away.
