  • Private rooms in shared tipis a 15-minute walk from Playa de El Palmar
  • Cabo Trafalgar 10 minutes’ drive; Cádiz 40 minutes
  • Outdoor pool with umbrellas; well-equipped communal kitchen
Just inland from the sandy Playa de El Palmar beach (5 minutes’ drive or a 15-minute walk), on Andalusia’s Costa de la Luz, Kampaoh Hostel El Palmar is a top spot. The site welcomes families and groups of friends, of course, but it arguably holds extra appeal for solo travellers, who can book sleeping quarters in modern shared tipis with three private rooms: two at the bottom and another right at the top. Isn’t that a genius idea? And these accommodations come with pretty luxurious touches, too: from a thick, comfortable mattress (bed linen and towels are included, by the way), to an electric fan to stay cool during the warmest Andalusian nights – though breezes blowing in from the Atlantic might already help in that department. There’s also a pastel-coloured vintage-style cooler for your drinks and snacks. After bonding with your tipi mates and neighbours, you might decide to spend time with them playing volleyball, relaxing under an umbrella on the grassy lawn around the outdoor pool, or perhaps cooking together in the communal kitchen, which comes with microwave oven, toaster, fridge, kettle and cafetieres, plus plenty of crockery and assorted tools. No desire to cook? No problem – in addition to an on-site restaurant, there are plenty of eateries in El Palmar de Vejer (five minutes; 20 on foot), especially along the seafront promenade. The modern and impeccably maintained toilet block has Arab-style bathrooms, and there’s also a launderette.

Local attractions

Cabo Trafalgar (10 minutes’ drive) is a headland topped by the Faro de Trafalgar lighthouse, dating from the 1860s. The Yacimiento Arqueológico de Caños de Meca - Villa Romana includes the ruins of a 1st-century BC Roman villa with baths, as well as a Bronze Age necropolis. Beyond all that, of course, this is a great spot for far-reaching ocean and coastal views. There are great views of the labyrinthine town centre of Cádiz (40 minutes) from the belltower of the spectacular Catedral de la Santa Cruz. Relax in the shade at the waterfront Parque Genovés, check out an exhibition at the Castillo de Santa Catalina and don’t forget to book a table at one of the many flamenco bars in town. Once a fortified settlement, Tarifa (50 minutes), at the southernmost tip of Spain, is now a popular spot for windsurfing. From here you can also catch a ferry to Tangier and add a little Moroccan flavour to your holiday.
