  • Family site on a working farm and private nature reserve
  • Hikers' and bikers' haven: a 30-minute drive from Karoo National Park
  • Meet the farm animals, and the springbok and wildebeest that wander in
Springbok, wildebeest and … donkeys? Oh my! If your getaway dreams revolve around safaris and meeting the animals, make your way to Steenbokkie Nature Reserve, a family-friendly site 10 minutes’ drive from the town of Beaufort West in Western Cape, South Africa. Steenbokkie is a top spot for meeting the South African wildlife: springbok and wildebeest regularly have a nose around the site, and Karoo National Park – where you can get up close with giraffes, zebra and oodles more – is only half an hour away. There are also loads of tame farm animals on site, which kids in particular will enjoy meeting. For exploration out of the wild, head to Beaufort West to get a taste of local history. Start with the historical walking tour of the town, then make your way to the Christian Barnard Museum where you can learn all about the man who performed the world’s first human-to-human heart transplant. Before heading back to site, sign yourself up for a birding safari or a fossil exploration of Karoo National Park and climb aboard a donkey cart tour to see the Karoo area in the local style – you might even be lucky enough to get a glass of champers to ease your way. Wander back to Steenbokkie, stopping at the supermarket on the way, and fire up the barbecue or get a potije bubbling over the campfire, then tuck in to dinner while gazing at the stars. If you want to treat yourself, there are oodles of restaurants in Beaufort West to try out.

Local attractions

Donkey carts, birding safaris and fossil explorations might be a good start, but exploring Karoo National Park (half an hour’s drive from Steenbokkie Nature Reserve) on your own two feet is a must. There are plenty of trails of varying difficulties to follow, but the Fossil Braille Trail (adapted for visitors with vision impairment), Bossie Trail, 11-kilometre long Fonteintjieskloof Trail and Karoo Erdvark Trail come highly recommended. If you’re one of the people who think walking ruins a good game of golf (just go with it), you may want to leave the hiking boots back on site and instead head for the greens at the Beaufort West Golf Club, 15 minutes away. You can also crack out your two-wheeled friend and clamber into the saddle for some biking adventures – if the routes above are just a little tame for you, turn your wheels towards the Hillandale MTB route about an hour and a half’s drive away.
