- Peaceful spot on the banks of the Vaal River with fishing and canoeing
- Parys half an hour’s walk; Johannesburg one hour and 20 minutes’ drive
- Three swimming pools; barbecues and lapas; cafés and shops in Parys
River Cottages Caravan and Camping, on the banks of the Vaal River, is just the place for some R&R in the North West province of South Africa (and visits to neighbouring Free State province). This peaceful, family-friendly spot has plenty of open space, not to mention access to more than a kilometre of the riverfront.
The banks of the Vaal are dotted with weeping willows and reeds, so a day of fishing is likely to be rather splendid here. Guests can feel free to launch their own canoe or raft to explore the river.
If a lazy day is on the agenda, there are three inviting swimming pools, plus several lapa structures for shaded shelter and braai facilities for an authentic South African barbecue. There are also electric hook-up points, and communal showers and toilets with both hot and cold water.
And that’s not all: River Cottages is less than three kilometres away from the centre of Parys (approximately half an hour’s walk away, just across the river), a small country town with art, antique and coffee shops, as well as a wide range of excellent restaurants.
And since Parys sits on the Vaal, it’s also possible to get stuck into activities like fishing, canoeing and river rafting here. If you’re after something that isn’t water-related, there are hiking and four-wheel drive trails in and around the town, plus easy access to outdoor activities like paintballing, abseiling and quad biking.

Local attractions
Extreme-sports enthusiasts won’t have far to go to get their thrills, whether it’s tandem jumps at Skydive Parys (10 minutes’ drive) or ziplines at Koepel Mega Zip Adventures (15 minutes), where you can travel above the Vredefort Dome, a huge crater formed after impact with an asteroid many millennia ago.
If you’re travelling with the kids (and even if you’re not), Vanderbijlpark (40 minutes) is well worth a visit, with the Aquadome, an indoor waterpark with multiple pools and a lazy river, plus miniature golf. If you’re after the real thing (golf-wise), there’s the Heron Banks Golf Course, stretching along the Vaal River.
In Johannesburg (one hour and 20 minutes), Mandela’s House, the Apartheid Museum and the various sites at Constitution Hill Human Rights Precinct all shed light on the country’s regime of racial segregation, which lasted for close to half a century. You might be lucky enough to catch a sporting event at Ellis Park Stadium, or interesting exhibitions at Johannesburg Art Gallery.
