  • Wild camping on a sustainable farm 55 minutes' drive from Ljubljana
  • Zoo Park Ranč Aladin 25 minutes’ drive; Steklas Trail 35 minutes
  • Resident horses and educational tours; barbecue provided; dogs welcome
Sitting on a south-facing hill almost at the geographical centre of Slovenia – a 25-minute drive from Litija (to the north west), Ivančna Gorica (to the south west) and Trebnje (to the south east) – Ranch Lambergar is a great base from which to explore this green Balkan country. This family-friendly site, which extends across 16.5 hectares of meadow and forest, is part of a farm devoted to sustainable agriculture and nature preservation. The owners grow their own food, including a collection of heirloom varieties of fruit and vegetables, and they also run educational activities such as greenhouse tours. This is no resort; across the wilderness area at night, you might hear deer, donkeys, owls and crickets, but no traffic. If you’re into animals more than plants, you can learn all about the rare Slovenian domestic animals who live on site, and get up close and personal with the resident horses and donkeys. Your canine companion is a welcome guest here, but please be mindful of the resident beasties and other guests. There are no pre-assigned pitches, so park your car at the entrance of the ranch and take a walk around to locate the perfect spot for you. If you’re passionate about all things equestrian, you might want to set up in the horse paddock; maybe you’ll prefer to be pond-side or choose a pitch with views of the hills (and all the way to Croatia). In addition to a composting toilet, an outdoor solar shower, an outdoor sink for washing dishes and a barbecue, there are no artificial lights on site. The site owners are happy to provide an assortment of items and tools for their guests, so feel free to ask if you need anything. Ever obliging, they will also pick you up from the nearest public transport stop, if you’re travelling without your own vehicle.

What customers say

This farm campsite offers a peaceful, nature-focused experience with friendly hosts and beautiful mountain views. Guests appreciate the rustic amenities, including composting toilets and outdoor showers, as well as the on-site farm animals. While most find the serene, isolated location ideal for relaxation, some note the primitive nature of the facilities and challenges with access roads. A few reviews mention specific issues with privacy, animal care, or unexpected charges.

Power optional grass and earth campsite (mountain view, secluded)

Liked Private spot with fabulous view (mountains in various ranges, absolutely worth the extra €). Easy going, small camp-place with basic amenities (compost toilet and outdoor - cold - shower: refreshing ;-) Lovely care-takers, some cute farm animals. In the centre of Slovenia.

Tip: drive 25 min to Litija and take the 30 min train to Ljubljana, very convenient

Disliked Take care coming there with a trailer or bigger bus/camper: choose the 417 way via Trebnje and Mira, only the last 3 km (off the 417) are somewhat narrow but quite doable.

Power optional grass tent campsite

Liked The location and its surroundings are remarkably peaceful and serene. While it offers essential amenities, they were perfectly adequate for our needs. If I ever come back to Slovenia,I would certainly stay here again.

The owners were exceptionally kind and provided invaluable assistance with everything. I recommend this ranch to anyone considering a visit.

Power optional grass tent campsite

Liked Very peaceful and beautiful farm. There’s lots of farm animals like horses, chickens, donkeys, geese and goats in pens that you can go pet if you’d like but you can also avoid them. The owners are very nice and welcoming. The cats are amazing and friendly. We also bought some very cheap and very nice eggs from their chickens and the owners lit a campfire in the evening. We had free access to toilet and a sink with water and a small kitchen area with a gas stove and some pots and pans. We didn’t use the showers but they are available.

Disliked The toilet is a primitive outdoor toilet - It is clean and well kept but some people might dislike this. It is a bit difficult to get to the place but the drive is fun.

Route directions

If arriving via the A2 highway, it is best to avoid taking the exit for Bič – this is often suggested by satnavs but it has some extremely narrow sections and a low underpass so is not suitable for anyone driving anything larger than a car. Instead, take the exit for either Trebnje-Zahod (travelling via Novo Mesto) or Ivančna Gorica (via Ljubljana) as these are more suitable roads for large vehicles. By public transport, take the train to Litija and then take a bus towards Gabrovka (five times daily, Monday-Friday). Disembark at the bus stop in Moravče – from there it's a hike of 4 km (or pick-up can be arranged if requested in advance).

Local attractions

Wolves, camels and kangaroos are among the residents at Zoo Park Ranč Aladin (25 minutes’ drive). Children can take part in get-to-know sessions with their animal of choice, have a go at archery or expend some energy in the playground, with climbing frames and swings. Among the great hikes in the area is the Steklas Trail (35 minutes), which you can follow all the way up to the top of Nebesa (a 600-metre mountain covered in forest). Your efforts will be rewarded with views across sloping vineyards, the Mirna Valley and the peaks of southern Slovenia. Anchored by the massive Tivoli Park (and the wooded slopes of Roznik Hill beyond), and dominated by a hilltop medieval castle, Ljubljana (55 minutes) is a lively university city. The large pedestrianised centre is dotted with cafés, restaurants and bars, and museums include the popular House of Illusions.
