Whether you’re after epic summer hikes in the forested mountains around the Savinja Valley or thrilling snow adventures at Golte Ski Resort (35 minutes’ drive) in the winter months, staying at Camping Prodnik puts you pretty close to the action. Set on the banks of the river Savinja, this well-maintained site sits one kilometre north of the peaceful village of Okonina and about 10 minutes’ drive from Mozirje, in northern Slovenia.
The site is part of a sports centre, and it would be churlish not to take advantage of the facilities available, whether it’s hiring a bike to visit places like Mozirski Gaj park, volunteering your entire family for a match on the beach volleyball court, or renting a kayak for water-based exploration.
Speaking of water-based action, dogs are welcome to have a swim in the river Savinja, and can make good use of the on-site dog shower afterwards. It’s also possible to fish for trout in the river (please note that you’ll need a permit). Meanwhile, adventure-shy kids can retreat to the games room, which comes with a ping-pong table and a handball court, or to the playground.
The on-site restaurant serves excellent home-cooked food, including Slovenian specialities like štruklji dumplings and rich soups, plus a delicious buckwheat bread. All pitches come with electricity and water hook-up, and the site also has a modern (and heated) toilet/shower block with facilities for disabled guests and a launderette. For a little extra pampering, guests can also use the Finnish sauna and fitness centre in the adjacent guesthouse or visit the well-stocked wine cellar.

Local attractions
In Ljubno ob Savinji (five minutes’ drive), the Interactive Timber-Rafting Museum has displays on this centuries-old (but no longer practised) local craft – from traditional rafters’ costumes to equipment and the history of the trade. Have a go on the simulator to experience the trip rafters used to take from the Savinja Valley to the Black Sea.
Keen hikers head east to Biba Planina (40 minutes’ drive), a plateau dotted with small ponds where, in the summer months, sheep, horses and cattle graze lazily in the alpine meadows. Check out the simple Kapela Sv. Antona, built of wood and stone, and wander along forested trails, taking in far-reaching views of the valley.
Within the Ponikovski Kras Plateau, Pekel Cave (one hour and 15 minutes) is a large karst cavern with a terrifying reputation. ‘Pekel’ means hell, and the name is largely due to the vapours that emanate from the cave’s entrance in the winter months, when it’s warmer inside than out.
